Why are people so afraid of snakes?

I mean if you ask majority of the people in America what animal they are most afraid of a snake would be at the top. Why?
is it because you usually don't come upon many snakes in your lifetime and when you do you just freak out?
Is it because some are venomous?..they're a lot more venomous creatures out there too..like scorpions, spiders, insects that doesn't nearly attract the scare as snakes.
I've seen people damn near break their necks running from garter snakes.

It is one of our oldest and deepest fears...embedded in our amygdala in our brain. Reptilians were mammalians' main predators for more than a hundred million years.
I would also guess that the motion and lack of limbs - giving the creatures a sense of otherness that crocs/gators/lizards don't have - plays into it as well.

The stigma that comes with snakes. They aren't aesthetically pleasing, along with being venomous. I mean is this seriously a question?

Fear of snakes is instinctive and is natural. Probably evolved the fear for a reason. Same thing with roaches.
