Why do couples that choose to have kids and move to the burbs look down on couples that choose to focus on their careers and have more disposable income? Is it jealousy of all the cool shite they can afford to do and all the free time they get?

I wouldn't get married if I didn't want kids. I'd rather play the field. The only reason to get married is to have kids.
Sort of disagree - if you can have two incomes under one roof, wouldn't that be better? You'd just have to find a woman that also doesn't want children

I'll add to this mix that I think those of us who like the concept of having a family tend to view getting married and having children as an innate rather than learned condition.
I'm not sure what an anthropologist would say about it, but I think there is probably a pretty deeply held belief that not desiring those things is unnatural.
Procreating for the survival of the species is basically the #1 natural instinct of every animal.
Some people just overcome it. And yes that is more rare than people who succumb to it.
I can't wait to have kids, but I'm waiting for our lives to financially more stable and we're going to try and cut it off at 2. Sadly, people in my situation would need about 6 to keep up with the welfare state.

I get pissed because we need more successful, intelligent people to procreate to stop the world from being overrun by Tammy Lynn and Billy Joe who have 11 kids in the trailer park.

Because most people see this time and time again, the couple "focuses" on their career, get older with no one to care for them. It is reality that I think many/most of the ones that deliberately chose not to have kids don't think about.
How many people on here live far distances from their parents? Or have strained relationships? Even if I had children, I wouldn't want to burden them with caring for me as adults.
All adults, whether they have kids or not, need to make effort to continue to foster friendships & family bonds. Too many couples end up lost when their kids grow up & move out because they didn't do much to maintain friendships & lives outside of their children. Everyone should save for retirement/buy long term care insurance/whatever to care for themselves.

Yeah I find the "who will take care of you when you age" argument to be really odd. And you hear it a lot.

Agreed. And what's more selfish sounding than that?

I don't look down on them, but I know a few who made that choice and later on looked for pity claiming "they never got to experience children" bullshite!

If you don't have kids you should have a few extra $100,000 for a good nursing home

Because I love my wife, enjoy the dual income, and the tax benefits.
Not to mention all the social stigmas that you can avoid
