John Corbitt used to do Applebees and now he does Walgreens. Whenever I hear him say "at the corner of happy and healthy" I get this strange urge to kill.

Donald Sutherland for OJ commercials

ETA: Gene Hackman used to do the Lowes commercials and Chris Parnell (SNL) does Hotels.com.

I forgot about Braff and Duchovny. Braff did PUR water filters, too.

Jason Sudeikis does some as well.

They've got to be cheaper than having the actress come in studio. You still get voice and name recognition for less money. And people skip commercials anyway.

I just did some voice overs for a commercial. Not sure that is worth a shite but sounded like a fun idea to try.

Didn't John Goodman do a dunkin donuts voice-over last year?

Edit: And Queen Latifah did Pizza Hut.

Oh, and the Planters Peanut guy, first time he ever talked, was Robert Downey Jr.

It costs them less to just pay for voice work, and the familiarity of the voice is received by customers even if they don't automatically realize who it is.

Not a new fad by any means. Hackman did united way back when and chuck Heston did bud.

I've wondered this about kids animated movies. Seems like paying way more than necessarily for an actor when you can find someone to do it for a small fraction of that price. Like a kid is going to care if a mammoth in ice age is ray ramano's voice...
