CIB just means you served in theater.
Uhh. No. You don't get a CIB just for serving in theatre.

Yeah you have to receive DIRECT fire and return with direct fire, right?

99% boredom with 1% terror. Or Iraq was like that.
I was over there as well and that's how I'd put it.
I tell people the good days were good and the bad days were awful. In 359 days over there there were only two that I thought I might not see the end of the day.

Yes. Engage the enemy. That's the only requirement. I'm going to stop posting because I know people that earned a CIB that didn't see a quarter if the combat I did.

Correct. You can't get a CIB because someone shot at the convoy you were riding in. Or an IED blew up next to you. You have to basically take fire, dismount, and engage the enemy.

That's how I got my CAR. One of our trucks broke down and a couple of knuckleheads were hopelessly taking potshots with AKs. Everyone on the convoy got one even though only a few people returned fire.

Mental, emotional, and psychological numbness. That might be unique to fighting a counter-insurgency, though. I don't know.
The things you remember most are extremely visceral: smell, taste, sound, touch. I won't forget the smell of Iraq for the rest of my days.

Yeah I sometimes think about going back in as a medic with option 40 but they'd send me to SOCM as soon as I got to Regiment. frick that.

Very true. Some things you just can't shake.
As stupid as this sounds, hear me out. I live on a big piece of land and we have a bunch of livestock. My son has this thing about wanting goats and I just can't do it. After seeing all of those dead goats in Afghanistan with an IED inside of them I hate a fricking goat.
I know it's irrational. And thanks to the medics who posted here.

You either receive a CIB (Combat Infrantryman's Badge) or you don't. It means you have engaged and closed with the enemy. Not like having a mortar round land inside the perimeter of your base or something
That's funny, because I saw an entire unit receive CIBs for literally the exact scenario you listed: a mortar attack on a COB.

Yeah. He kind of walked right into that one.
