Washington. Try Bellingham, where Western Washington St. is located, a progressive (in the best sense of the word) college town.

That is probably true, but in Austin it seems like half of the people that I meet are from Cali. There was some kind of statistic about in the paper a while back.

Obviously it varies greatly depending on which part of the state you're in and if you prefer urban or rural living or whatever shades of gray in between.

In addition to that it depends on your profession and income level.

If you're a blue collar laborer in a skilled trade then I'd go with Minnesota, Washington, or Oregon.

If you're a run of the mill white collar laborer then I'd go with Texas or Washington.

If you're amongst the best in a STEM field then I'd go with California.

Colorado would be perfect for me if I had a job there although it's a bit far from the beach

"For a weekend". Charleston is nice and all, but you can see and do it all within a weekend. The people here are generally dull and all the same. It's too hoity-toity, if the music is too loud, turn it down, etc. You always be dressed like a 10 year old boy or you'll "offend someone". Charleston is so small that everyone knows everyone. It's a town of small circles. People talk...it's a dull, boring town after a few years.

Is Cali still considered a "destination" state? It seems like people are migrating out of there in droves.

More jobs were added in California than any other state in the past 12 months.

I think within the next 5 years they cave to the SJWs.

If you want to do a ban bet, we can do that.

Remind me in 5 years, unless it happens sooner.

I definitely agree and got the same vibe when I visited. It is a place that was awesome to visit but maybe not such a great place to live and raise a family.

Not very impressive when there were over 8 million births.
Well there is another side of that equation. According to the last few years the census provides data, (though 2008), birth rates were ~ 14 per 1000 while death rates were ~ 8 per 1000. So California has still grown by about 1.5 million more than would be expected given the birth and death rates.
