One can see how this would be suitable for them. Bunch of dudes underground in tight quarters for extended periods of time.

USAF owns and operates the silos and missiles. Department of Energy owns the actual warheads.

I could see how it would make sense entrusting them with caring for phalluses.

For the last time, you're not invited, upgrayedd.

Please don't ask again.

I'd be shocked if you could swim 200 meters, with equipment, in open water, alone..

Air Force for the ballistics and DoE for the cores.

Grew up hearing my grandpa's stories when he was in Air Force in '51'ish stationed in Caribou, Maine at the SAC/AEC base. This was before the AEC turned into DoE, and when Top Secret clearance was Q clearance. Apparently, back in those days the cores were kept under heavy security in the AEC base right up until they were brought over to the SAC base and loaded into a bomber to be combined with the detonator housing over a target. I was always curious what kind of atomics they were doing during his stint till '54, as the hydrogen bomb had been developed and carried during this time. Sadly, he did not know.
