Where to stay?
Stay the hell out.

Ridgeland, Madison, Clinton, Pearl, Flowood. Several good places around Renaissance Shopping center in Ridgeland (highland Parkway) and Madison. Convenient to Jackson, with good places to eat close by.

I grew up in wets Jackson, now the warzone known as West Jackson and moved to Clinton (Really nice town, in 1961. Live in Clinton now. Like DTMB, I can't tell you how many times I have been murdered in all those years. Only place I was ever robbed with a guy holding a gun was in Army days in San Antonio.
While in Jackson, Be careful around Gang Members, Robbers, Car Jackers, PanHandlers, The Mayor, Gas Stations, Convenience Stores, Hospital Parking Garages, Bars and clubs, Liquor Stores, and any red light you are forced to stop at after 6:00 pm. I would avoid west Jackson and south Jackson, also Jackson State, university drive, Capitol Street west of Downtown, Terry Road, Northside drive east of H-49, County Line Road. Bla Bla Bla.
I carry and as long as the bad guy misses on their first shot, I would have a chance. However, many complaints of Jackson shootings consist of 40 or 50 shots, with some automatic fire mentioned.
There is a black funeral home in West Jackson where a gang member was being funeralized one afternoon. A group of guys drove into the back parking lot as the funeral ended and shot four people.
The Jackson Police almost always catch the shooters. Most of the time, they are guys and girls out on bail from a previous felony. I guess I should have mentioned that it would also be smart to avoid previous felons, out on bond.

That sounds like some NO shenanigans, everything thing about these two American cities can be traced back to the lack of one thing.

As mentioned in this thread there are about three hotels in Jxn worthy of staying in, The Westin, The King Edward and the new hotel in Fondren near UMC. If you stay at any of those, do not walk to a nearby restaurant at night (and possibly not during the day). Flowood or Madison/Ridgeland are where I would recommend staying. Pearl is a little seedy/grimy/blue collar but safe, I'm not that familiar with Clinton, but it is in Hinds County.

The Westin isn’t bad.

If you’re on a budget then look at Brandon. If you don’t mind spending a little more then go to Madison.

I’ve stayed in Jackson hotel many times. There really isn’t a good area so I just stay at the nice downtown Marriott.

Hilton Garden Inn Flowood
Pretty much nicest hotel and area there’s restaurants in the parking lot or short drive

Nicest hotel in Rankin County. Good golf course, top floor bar, lazy river, live music and zero crime.

Stay in Pearl or Brandon. You can hop on I-20 then I-55 then the Pearl St exit easily in morning traffic to get to the convention center. The approach if you stay in Madison, Ridgeland or Flowood is a little busier.

We arrested a guy in Jackson and he was limping. When asked why, we said that he had been pumping gas at a downtown station and got shot in the foot. But it was no big deal because the bullet had passed through. We examined the wound and he was clearly wrong. The bullet was still there and the wound was badly infected. Got him to the hospital to save his foot and his life.
No big deal, just another shooting in Jackson...
Never even made the news or crime reports - like it never happened.
But those of us telling you to stay North of County Line Road are dismissed as cowards by people who have no clue.
