I think of three different things:

Backpack - has a strap for each shoulder and can be worn on either side or both shoulders.

Schoolbag - is shaped like a gym bag and held with only one hand.

Book sack - has a drawstring and is held on either shoulder.

Houma - school bag. Went to public school where we had to have mesh of see through school bags in junior high. Can't remember if we had to in high school as well.
