Alcohol 100% has health benefits in moderation.

Actually that's necessarily true. If you read deeper into the studies it shows that for some people alcohol has benefits, but for others it is bad even in moderation.

quote:

It showed that when you simply compare alcohol consumption and health outcomes, you find a clear beneficial effect of moderate alcohol consumption. But if you take former drinkers out of the abstainers group, then the benefits don’t look so rosy – in fact, they all but disappear.

Which is to say, the health benefits gained by moderate drinkers who continue to drink is offset by "abstainers" who actually used to drink but who quit because of deleterious health effects.

There is also suspicion that the 'moderate drinkers' happen to be people who exercise more self control in general and so the correlation is not necessarily indicative of a causal relationship.

ETA: and this is coming from a dude who really enjoys a drink.

Because the national narrative among the kids today is that rich people are bad. It's not that hard

May Clinic seems to think it has healthy benefits

And my favorite study was with the 14,000 people monitored for 25 years:

60 Minutes goes to Leisure World

quote:

Lesley Stahl: OK, Vitamin E. We're sitting at the edge of our chairs. Does it-- did it make a difference? Vitamin--

Claudia Kawas: It was--

Lesley Stahl: --E?

Claudia Kawas: --my favorite, but uh-uh.

Lesley Stahl: No?

Claudia Kawas: People who took Vitamin E didn't live any longer than people who didn't take Vitamin E.

They also looked at Vitamin A, C, and calcium...

Claudia Kawas: The short answer is none of 'em made a difference.

Lesley Stahl: None of them made a difference to living--

Claudia Kawas: In terms of--

Lesley Stahl: --a long life?

Claudia Kawas: --how long you live.

Lesley Stahl: What about alcohol?

Claudia Kawas: Oh. Alcohol made a difference.

But it may not be what you think...

Claudia Kawas: Moderate alcohol was associated with living longer than individuals who did not consume alcohol.

Lesley Stahl: Wait a minute. Ha-- moderate-- alcohol you live longer?

Claudia Kawas: Yes.

Up to two drinks a day led to a 10-15 percent reduced risk of death compared to non-drinkers.
Jane Whistler: Isn't that exciting?

And any kind of alcohol seemed to do the trick.

Claudia Kawas: A lot of people like to say it's only red wine. In our hands it didn't seem to matter.

Lesley Stahl: Martinis just as good.

Claudia Kawas: Yeah.

The amount of alcohol that I consume is killing any possible disease that could affect my body.

The Keith Richard Diet is what I call that.

He can't get cancer or diseases because he kills them off.

No doubt.

Ripping a couple gator tails during the weekend at 2 AM to keep the lights on is way better than being the guy chain smoking 2 packs of cigarettes that same weekend.

How is that the same?

Alcohol has health benefits in moderation.

Alcohol in excess is deadly.

There are more alcohol related deaths than tobacco related deaths every year fwiw.
