bass boats are running in the upwards of $100k.

This is just another example of things getting ridiculous because madison avenue tells us we "need to have this or we're trashy".

You need a 100k bass boat or youre just a poor rowing a pirogue. How many more fish you catch?

You need a 100k kitchen or you're just a trashy poor cooking on a skillet. Are you making better food?

You need $20k of golf clubs. Whats your handicap? Keeping it under 8? Probably not.

You need a 70" tv or your just a poor with an old tv. So you can watch reruns on Netflix?

You need a F250 Super Duty with really big emblems and SUPER DUTY stamped into the metal in like eight places or it's just a ranger. F150's dont count anymore. PS what are you hauling?

It gets really old and I do not fall for that stuff. If ya'll want to come over and have a cheap beer out of my white fridge please do so.

I golf and honestly I don’t want to know how much I spend annually on it. Between the CC dues, equipment, clothes, trips etc. I’m sure it’s way more than I care to admit.

It all comes down to what do you want out of life and what are you able and willing to do about it.

To each his own, as long as you don't blame your neighbor

or expect your neighbor to subsidize you

or expect your neighbor to endorse you

or complain your neighbor does not mimic you

or claim your way is the correct way and others are wrong.

Healthy and fitness is my hobby.
The startup costs are up there but maintenance costs aren’t much at all.

Example, I can afford a $100k bass boat but it just seems idiotic at that point so would move into some other hobby.

I'm in the same boat.

I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on something that I might use 30 weeks out of the year for maybe a total of 60 days. I bought a canoe and spend more time doing that than anything else. Small tackle box, small rivers and large creeks. Way more fun.

?? $5k will get you nearly anywhere in the world on Turkish in Biz. Full fare coach flights to Europe and Asia are under $3k. The average flight cost to Tokyo for next month is about $1400 in coach (from IAH.)

I will spend about 5% of my annual income on "experiences" such as travel, concerts, etc.

I fly fish every chance I get. (Trout in north Georgia and parts of TN & NC.)

Fly rod: $300.00 max
Tying vise: $150.00
Fly line: $80.00 every couple of years
Hooks and some fly tying materials: $20.00/year
Other tying materials: Free on edge of road

I'm lazy and fish out of a Gheenoe LoTide-15 I paid $2500 for - boat, motor, and trailer.

Fuel runs about $15.00/weekend for a 25HP Johnson

Add waders and boots for those areas where I have to wade and I've turned what is a generally expensive hobby for most into a pretty inexpensive pastime over the past dozen years or so.

Big hint - Tie your own flies with readily available materials, make your own leaders from monofilament line, don't buy a bunch of Orvis stuff at the store or online.

For boats - no need to buy a new one when you can get a very nearly new one for half price or less.

Fishing, hunting, and mud riding have never held my interest to the point to invest a lot of time and money in them. The amount of money people spend on those three things is insane but to each their own.

They are expensive, no doubt. I do all 3 pretty much year round and I don't even want to calculate how much it hast cost. Even when you have all the equipment, fuel alone for all those machines and towing is high.

ETA--my only bottom line is if I can get by with it without pissing off my wife.

I've realized I'm just one of those people who spends according to use.

A mattress to sleep on every night, running shoes to wear every day, a trusted frying pan to cook my dinner, a TV to watch every night....the sky is the limit. I put daily mileage on those items.

But I'm not spending squat on something I rarely use, even if I enjoy it.

I konw guys (that aren't that good) that carry around a very expensive bag. That probably also includes gadgets and stuff, but still kind of crazy. When I was younger and played more, I could've waxed any one of them without a range finder or custom irons.

I will spend a lot, but I usually shop hard for a great value. When I did Triathlons, I had bikes that I paid thousands for. But I sold them for thousands when I gave it up. So over 5 years, I probably came out losing about 2500 on 3 high end bikes. In woodworking, I have some high end tools that cost me thousands (sawstop, festool, etc), but again, I but things I know maintain value and get used if it's possible to limit the depreciation on my end. Picked up guitar again and willing to pay for a high end guitar, but I researched the heck out of it and got something that keeps its value and may be able to sell for what I paid of patient.
