Jack russel terrier FTW. Mine watches tv and if we mute it for some reason she will budge the soundbar with her nose until it is back on. Smartest little dog I've ever seen just high energy.

one of my dogs is some sort of border collie, aussie, german mix and he's so smart he comes up with these abstract ideas daily.

one day, at age 3.5, he decided that he was tired of the other dog hogging attention so he came up with a scheme that i still don't understand fully whereby he could have one-on-one time with me in the am while brat dog scarfs down her food, but still keep her from eating his food. he was so proud of it. he can escape pretty much anything and will look you in the eye trying to figure out what you're asking him. he can also spell and his vocab is scary. he has OBJ-like catching ability and agility. i've also seen him watch a fast current for a while to judge exactly where to enter to be able to ford safely.

i don't train him to do a bunch of tricks, but if you just observe his little thought processes and ability to learn on his own, it's pretty crazy.

This was my Great Dane when I was at LSU. Not very bright, but more of a "bro" than any other dog I've had.

Beautiful dog! Mine looks the same as yours (black w/white chest and feet.) He certainly acts like a bro more than any other dog I've been around.

My GS was like that. People thought I was nuts until they witnessed it for themselves. She learned daily patters such as time I would go to work, come home, etc. She was also very intuitive about my mood.

Maybe you guys can suggestion a breed. We have 3 younger children - 2 girls & a boy. The girls are fine around dogs but the boy likes to rough house with them like he's the alpha. It's rare but he has been bit. He just fusses at the dog but once he bit my in laws dog back. Funniest shite I've seen. I'm thinking sturdy, laid back but with a bit of playfulness. It's been along time since I've had a dog just looking for a direction.

We always had whippets growing up, great dogs for families with small kids. They are super super loyal, great with kids, and pretty smart. They are athletes, so as long as you have a fenced yard they will be fine, just never ever let them off leash, they are sight hounds and will run. Once they have a little exercise, their perfect day is sleeping all day and laying by you.

yeah man, mine is so smart its annoying.

Doesn't fall for dumb shite most dogs do. He knows what I'm talking about when I talk to it like another human. Its strange.

He opens doors, understands difference between about 20 toys, understands difference between driver seat, front seat, and back seat, remembers my mom's grandma nickname after not having heard it for months, etc.

He also sleeps in the our king size bed with his head on the pillow and prefers Animal Planet to ESPN which he audibly tells me with moans and groans and a paw to the remote.

ETA:

I didn't train him other than to not shite in the house, so everything is self taught from watching us. Thats the crazy part. He learns new things constantly. He also uses his paws like they are hands moreso than any dog I've ever been associated with.
