It's so cool & edgy to be disrespectful to those things that you should respect, right?

If you're near Lake Arthur...bring it to the American Legion post there. I'll dispose of it personally.

That's what this country has become for the most part. I have 4 flags here at work that people have brought to me. 3 of them are tattered and worn and need to be retired. It started out with me having 1 old flag on my desk and people that came through (vendors, salesmen, customers) would ask what I did with old flags. Now people bring me flags that need to be retired.

The fourth one is an older, really nice sewn flag that was obviously a burial flag (big enough to cover a coffin). It was found in a suitcase about to be thrown in a dumpster and given to me. It's sad to think that it once covered the coffin of a deceased service member and was thrown in a suitcase to be forgotten.

It's not a piece of cloth, it's freedom. You think we should throw freedom in the trash? I'll bet you wouldn't say that to my face, I'd kick your arse.

Not trying to be a "tough guy", just telling it like it is. If I see you disrespecting the flag I'm gonna teach you some respect real quick, and a lot of times that involves disrespectful little punks eating through a straw for a few weeks.

The stars should be cut away from the bars and then the whole thing should be burned in a fire with the utmost respect.

1. The flag should be folded in its customary manner.
2. It is important that the fire be fairly large and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the flag.
3. Place the flag on the fire.
4. The individual(s) can come to attention, salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection.
5. After the flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished and the ashes buried.
6. Please make sure you are conforming to local/state fire codes or ordinances.

I bet all the posters here who talk about respecting the flag or else have no problem making disrespectful comments about the President of the USA.

Give it to the Boy Scouts or the American Legion. They'll take care of it.

(And the people saying burn it are serious--cremation is the proper disposal method and it's carried out by those groups).

Flags can't talk. Or lie. If they could, I'd say shitty things about them too.

I take my worn flags to the Veteran's cemetery on Memorial Day and place in on the headstone of one of my deceased friends or family. The cemetery handles the disposal.

This is one of those "What you should do" vs. "What you can do" situations. You should dispose of it properly in accordance to the "rules", but you can just throw it away too. Nothing different will happen if you do it either way.

It does feel good to do the right thing when you can, though.
