IMHO, if you live with a person, accumulate wealth together and start family together then you have married that person. The actual wedding and filing the legal documents is a way that most choose to declare it but even those who never formally declare it have chosen the married life. Seriously, long before we developed these societal norms related to marriage there were couples choosing to be monogamous for life.

I heard some outrageous statistic, pre internet 1980's timeframe, something like 80%-85% of male kids of single moms ended up with a criminal record. No link or anything being from that far back, and that was prior to "acceptance" of single mommyhood.
If ya really wanna get to some highly possible causes for crazy PC and weird being the norm now, how about looking to daycare and dissolution of families actually raising their kids themselves. Is it any wonder the messed up millenials can't decide which way to turn when Mommy taught vaules "X" and daycare taught values "y,z,b,Q" from numerous workers over the most formative years of a kids life? Not talking all millenials, the messed up ones.

Yep. You have it figured out. It's a competition amongst the ladies and their friends: Get On My Level. And with social media, the competition is more fierce than ever, because the wedding pics are out there for the whole world to see.
If you want a hot young woman to share your bed with outside the bonds of matrimony, I would move out of the South, if I were you. The Southern girls want the big wedding and the big ring.

Single girls down here are perfectly content sharing a bed. Every damn one of them. "Southern Belles" are a rare breed. 99% of the girls down here will spread their legs if you look at them right

Like others have said, if you find the right girl, it's great. With that said, I have 4 friends who got married in the last couple of years, all four have told me they regret it immensely and I'm fairly certain at least two of them are talking to side pieces.
