They also seem very happy and fulfilled in their lives; could be the kids/grandkids, or it could be having someone to share their life with everyday. If you live in a state with strong common law marriage laws just shacking up with a girl for a long time basically makes you married as in how she can frick your life over if she wants to. At that point might as well get the tax break and let her in your hospital room in an emergency.

Just to help strengthen the OP's argument, you don't even have the incentive of tax breaks to get married.
You actually suffer a pretty large tax penalty for getting married vs just shacking up with your S.O.
And that is true whether it's a scenario with children or without.
Getting married lumps both spouses income together to throw you into a higher tax bracket in most cases vs reporting your income individually.
If you own a home and are able to itemize your deductions, that will be all you get as a married couple.
On the other hand, if you are simply living with your significant other, you can take all the deductions for mortgage interest, taxes, contributions, etc. against your income and then the S.O. can double down by taking the standard deduction on her individual return, which is an additional $6,900 in deductions.
Even better if you have a kid together as the S.O. can now file as head of household and take the child credit and daycare credit all against her income.
Just think of all the votes you wasted on evangelical republican politicians who wouldn't even lift a finger to eliminate the tax on marriage. They just wanted a share of the tithes.

When you're married, single life seems attractive. But I couldn't imagine life without my crumb eaters, so that's what's marriage is about, that and having a soul mate in the old ball and chain.

To my logical brain it just doesn't make sense. I seriously cannot see one positive that comes from it if you're not religious.
Except maybe it makes the bride and your family happy for a little while.

Marriage provides a structure for creating families within a society. This is how a society perpetuates itself. Society is the family writ large.
Our society making it about romantic storybook love, and self-fulfillment was a fatal mistake

Exactly. Advanced human civilization isn't "natural" on a base level either. But what separates humans from other species is that we rise above our base impulses and establish culture and civilization through organized values and norms.
The argument that it isn't "natural" is very poor. If humanity returned to and succumbed to a mere state of nature it would be very ugly and primitive.

On a serious note, is this how you should go about it. My fiancée and I had a baby in March, won't be married until 2017. Should she claim baby on 2016 taxes?
