Have you pondered what fresh hell tomorrow will bring?

Simple, let's say you have a person who doesn't often spend money on themselves.

A gift card takes care of that problem.

If I give cash they probably won't buy themselves anything nice, just spend on day to day etc.

Whereas a gift card can only be used for that specific purpose.

I used to give my cousins(2) that we have Christmas with a $20 card from the Musis Store in the mall.

I didn't know what they listened to.

I don't think I've ever seen anything like this on the OT. OP asked a perfectly reasonable question, several people agreed it was an odd idea, several people replied with rational answers and not one smart arse comment was made. Are you guys... maturing?

Because a gift card gives the illusion of forethought.

Where do I find one of these? Mine has no problem doing that.

Why not just give cash and not limit where the person could use it?

I hate giving gift cards and will not usually unless it's a specific request. That being said, I buy the hell out of gift cards but not for gifts. Churn churn churn....

I love a gift card. If anyone ever gives me cash it ends up being used to buy lunch, or give it to my wife if she needs some, or buy something at a gas station, etc. My birthday was a week ago. My little sister got me a Home Depot gift card. She knows I'm usually doing something around the house and I can use that. My older sister just put $33 in a card. I turned 33, and I guess that was her way of trying to be cute about just giving me cash. I think I used it to buy some pizza and something else last week. No idea.

Amazon gift cards are always great. You don't even have to go to a store to use them. I tell my family members to get those for myself and my wife. We're always ordering something with the free prime shipping, so they definitely get used. Half the time I get a gift card I forget to put it in my wallet and then I'm at the store digging through it trying to find it before paying and realize I left it at home.

One of the greatest marketing schemes in the history of retail sales.

$2 billion worth of gift cards went unused in 2012 alone:

Roughly $2 billion worth of gift cards will go unredeemed this year. That’s the estimate from the TowerGroup, cited recently at Philly.com.

This or amex. Something that will work at most any store. Amazon is a solid choice as well. I prefer gift cards.
