I lived there for 8 years. Well, I worked in Charleston and lived in Summerville. Best place I've ever lived.

That freaking ghetto can't touch Charleston.

Savannah is the most overrated city in America.

Excellent post.

Charleston is just not the same these days.

You don't think there's a vast difference in culture between the DC/NYC/Boston corridor and the southern US?

There's this type of sterile staleness that has descended on Charleston over recent years. It is just a "meh" place. It has coincided with an influx of people from the north moving into the area. That is probably where the Yankee hate comes from.

Also, any time a business closes downtown it gets turned into an overpriced boutique hotel.

And how many more hotels does it need?

Charleston is (or at least was) the epitome of the "Old South", a distillation of southern culture if you will.

Now in come the yankees from the corridor I mention that have zero connection or inclination to have anything to do with the culture that made Charleston what it was.

Do you understand now?

By making it less Southern.

This is a problem for us across the South.

Well that's probably because:

A) You're being willfully obtuse.
B) You're a yankee.
C) You're an idiot.
D) All of the above.

Take your pick I guess?

How many hit songs have been written about Charleston? How has it impacted popular culture?

Nola > Charleston

I rest my case...

I haven't been to Charleston (I'd like to), but Savannah was pretty underwhelming to me. One of those places that you kinda run out of things to do after 2 days.

There have been countless threads on Charleston on OT, Travel, and F&D boards.

Lived there 4 years and it was great, but the quoted is true.

I didn't care for it. Found the people there overly pretentious.

I haven't been since 2001 though, so maybe it's changed, but I doubt it.

Charleston society has always been that way. They took special pride in keeping up with London fashion and styles during the colonial period, it was one of ways they established their superiority.

You’ve probably heard the joke about North Carolina ... a valley of humility between two mountains of conceit.

That is accurate, on all sides. Virginians are quietly arrogant. South Carolinians are the opposite, they make a point of letting you know it.

I don’t want to sound harsh though, much of my family is from Charleston.
