You just pray it's not a female that laid eggs. I saw a documentary on that when I was little.

what are those giant black and red grasshopper things that seem to show up every summer?
IDK what they're called but they're the biggest grasshoppers I've ever seen. There was one on my deck the other day and one of the little green lizards ran up to it acting as if it were gonna have lunch. Grasshopper didn't flinch and appeared to say 'come at me, burr'. Lizard turned tail and ran away.

had one in my garden last year and i soaked it with the spray that i used to kill all of the other pests. this thing didn't flinch. didn't die either. just moseyed on it's way. sprayed it again and it just walked off like nothing happened.

Hard to tell but it kind of looks like a mole cricket.

I think you are talking about Eastern Lubber Grasshoppers.

As someone else has already said, they are called devil horses in some locales. I guess the "official" common name for them is Eastern Lubber Grasshoper, though. Seems the ones down here in Louisiana keep more of the juvenile coloration than those from other regions, as they have more yellow on the bodies.
