What's the longest notice you've worked?

I may have a new job opportunity in the next few weeks, and I believe it's going to take a significant amount of time to find/train my replacement due to the obscure software that I admin. My boss has been really good to me, so I don't want to leave him in a bad spot. What's a fair amount of time to ask of a new employer? Is 6-8 weeks definitely out of the question?

Depends on how badly your new employer needs you. 6-8 weeks seems like a lot

Yes

2 weeks, and that is being super nice

Your company would let you go in a heartbeat if needed.

It is business. Everyone understands this.

More than likely, yes.

There's a reason companies hire people, and that's because they need someone to do a job now - not two-months from now.

That said, float it if it means that much to you - you never know.

If your boss has been really good to you, why are you pursuing another opportunity?

People rate their job and their company based directly upon who they report do.

I just gave 4 weeks. It seemed the right thing to do given the number of projects I'm still working and that its a small company. Good company and bosses, just not the right fit going forward. They were very disappointed and may tell me to pound sand week! I'm prepared.

I just don't enjoy the work anymore. The level of stress/responsibility no longer matches up with the salary.

Holy shite anything longer than 2 weeks is outrageously generous.

2 weeks minimum
6 weeks in an extraordinary situation

This is all compounded by the fact that the only other person with equal knowledge of the software just left in the last month.

Based on personal experience, be prepared to be released of your duties immediately upon submitting your notice to your current employer.

I can understand that, but that will be the case with a lot of professional jobs. Do you not see yourself doing that type of work in the future or just with that company?

I don't expect this at all. They would seriously be really screwed, and they know it.

I was wrapping up a project and I knew the replacement would need to know the ins and outs in case there was an issue.

I gave 4 weeks notice....but the company treated me well and they knew my wife was possibly going to be transferred. I wouldn't give that much notice if I even suspected that they wouldn't take it well.

The new job is a lab setting with more hands on work, supporting only one facility. In current job, I am supporting several plants worldwide. I'm just sick of dreading every email.

Sounds like youve given it a lot of thought and it supports your career development plan.

6-8 seems like way too long. I'd say a month tops.

I just ended my old job last week after giving notice 3 months ago. Both my new and old employers wanted me bad enough that they both agreed to let me work both jobs simultaneously. It worked out great for me because I only had to close out projects at my old job which only took 10-15 hours per week for the last few months but they continued to pay my full salary.
