What would America look like if slavery was never institutionalized?

Question is in the title of the thread. What would the United States look like if there was never slavery? Slaves helped build the nation, but a war fought over slavery destroyed parts of it. I can tell you one thing, I bet it would look very different.

What happened when we took from those who were forced to work, and gave to those who would not?

It would look like South Africa or worse. The average American would be much more racist just because they wouldn't have interactions with black people.

And we would suck at basketball

The southeastern United States certainly wouldn't be as fat, poor and unhealthy as they are right now.

This country would be basically a giant Sweden, Iceland, Denmark or Norway and it woukd be even richer than it is now and healthier and much more attractive too. It would also have a very much more limited gov't than today.

This seems true through the 80's. How do you think the USA responds to the Mexicans if this scenario plays out?

We would have to be fricking like rabbits to maintain a healthy and generous birth rate to maintain a demographics advantage.

We're already seeing this scenario already playing out in Germany with the massive middle eastern immigration and Germany just passed Japan for the lowest birth rate in the world and it would be even lower if not for the immigrants. The gov't there has done everything it can to solve this demographic crisis but the child free movement/culture appears to be getting out of hand there.

Yep.

To give you an idea of what could work in the USA in this scenario....

Just like those countries mentioned, Single payer healthcare could actually work in that scenario with the homogenous demographics, healthy lifestyles and low obesity rates and sizable enough tax bases. Maybe, just maybe. But in this reality? Not a fricking chance.

And even then, I would still be opposed to it in that alternate reality as a small gov't conservative but I would be in the minority.

The civil war is a huge cause of racism in America, if a war wasn't fought over the slavery of blacks this country would have a very low percentage of racist people in this country. The immigration of blacks would have been voluntary and resulted in people that wanted to better themselves. The incarceration rate in this country would also not be the highest in the world per capita.

That's certainly the idealistic way to look at it

The capital and military for Manifest Destiny probably wouldn't have been there. California, Nevada, new mexico, Arizona, and probably more states would be Mexico. Mexico might have been the most wealthy nation in North America today.

85% less fast food joints across the country. No 20"+ chrome rims that keep spinning even when you stop. No interesting sports. No uptown and 3rd ward culture. No flexible use of the word "motherfricker". A relevant Michael Richards. Etc.

Abraham Lincoln's plan was brilliant. I doubt that he was the originator of the idea, but freeing the slaves and sending them home would have been the ideal solution. Hell, send them back with knowledge of English and French, tutors, arms and a basic understanding of crafts and industry and the country that would have come from that migration would be the most powerful and economically viable force in Africa to today.

Instead, we've got what we've got. I'm mildly Christian (a cafeteria Catholic), and I'm sort of buying into the idea of the sins of the fathers descending on their progeny. Our ancestors did what they did, their descendants are doing what they do. It seems only natural. But it could have been prevented using Lincoln's model.
