What was the reason DeAngelo’s restaurants shut down?

I never heard a clear answer why all of them shutdown. I passed the one on Bluebonnet & the sign is still on the door.

well, the one in Dutchtown lost their liquor license for serving alcohol to minors.

Part of it was simply the owner losing interest in the restaurant business.

Seems like they just stopped trying. That complacency was the death rattle. Covid was the nail in the coffin.

The one in LC just rebranded to a different name (121), keeping many of the same menu items. I'm only assuming the franchise agreement ran its course.

This was the story I heard as well. Louis (who was 17 when he came to Baton Rouge) probably made his money and simply didn’t have to work anymore.

Go to Bistro Italia on Coursey. That's Deangelo's nephew who worked for him forever. They got some good italian grub

Louis' dad got involved and started kind of taking over. It was never the same

I saw that a new Italian restaurant opened up at the old DeAngelo's on Jefferson next to the CC's.
Anyone know if it's any good? Been meaning to try it, but I keep forgetting that it exists.
DeAngelo's just seemed to sort of coast for a while, which is a bad sign for restaurants. Then from there the pandemic and Baton Rouge's notoriously high commercial real estate prices probably did them in. I thought there was one still open in Zachary or Central or something but I am not seeing it online.

La Contea has been open 5 years. It's good stuff.

Well it's new to me I guess. Going to have to try it.

Converted the one on Coursey to the fancy sit down restaurant, so that took a lot of resources. Then he tried to expand/franchise, but did not have the correct people overseeing that. Rotolos has over 30 locations, I think if Deangelo would have had the right people in place he would have double that.
He recently opened a new restaurant in WV.

La Contea is pretty solid and has become our go to for Italian dinner night with family.

+1
I would rather eat at Bistro Italia than any of the "High end Italian" places in Baton Rouge. Food is just better..

Expanded to fast, which caused a lack of quality control and consistency between locations. Seems like a new one was popping up every month there for a while. In addition, Louis wasn't focused on the business anymore and started venturing out to do other things, which also led to lack of quality control and consistency between locations. Eventually it all came crumbling down.

I went once about a month ago and was extremely disappointed. The food was low quality, the service was slow, and the atmosphere felt like a low rent hotel restaurant. Maybe they just had a bad night.

Louis Jr came and spoke to our MBA class. He said they were focusing more on the supply side of the business like sourcing ingredients and such for other restaurants. Margins were a lot higher and he seemed a lot more interested in that than chilling in Hammond Aire Plaza.
