Yes, independence Airport was a small airport between Florida Blvd and Goodwood where the state police complex is.

I remember watching the old Kurt Russell film about the UT sniper and seeing Independence Airport in the movie before it was demo’d to make room for the park system.

It was not Independence Airport it was just called the Downtown Airport. When the city made the deal with the state to move State Police from South Foster and build the park they named it Independence Park I’m pretty sure it was because 1976 bicentennial.

We used to travel under it from Old Goodwood to Bon Marche in the storm drains which are huge. We went as far as Greenwell Springs Road.

To illustrate how different NR was, imagine doing this and being the only ones to do it. Me and four friends rented the entire Abadie Buillding's top floor... in the first block of Third St... right across the street from where Happy's (was?)..one or two doors down from where Stroube's is now. We rented it for seven years from...

That is completely awesome and insane.
Hard to even fathom.

Martini: did all of that except 3 Dog Night. But...I did pay $5 along with about 40 or 50 other people to see Chuck Berry on a Monday night at The Speakeasy down Stanford Ave. by the lakes.

I don’t think I ever went in there. I remember there was a Phil-A-Sack there and the Volkswagen dealership was there and Billy Cannon buried his money behind one of them. The Crescent is there now.

I hung out at Tiger Lair and Chucks Bar both in Tigerland.

And to another post The Village was where Academy is now not across the street and Oak Manor was where Home Depot is.

Used to midnight bowl at Circle Bowl.

The $10 bag of weed was a “lid” and anyone smoking it was a Jellyhead and ask a kid today either of those and they have no clue.

When Bluebonnet stopped at I-10 it had a big bar pit where Mall of Louisiana is and they called it Nettie’s Pond for whatever reason I don’t know but it was a cool place to hang out on the weekends with the real hippies of the area. Later when they drained and filled in they found a bunch of stolen cars from over the years. Man that was a great place.

Would buy BBQ sandwiches at Pac-A-Sac for a quarter and the real and original Icee. Later when Penniman sold to 7-11 they had old Bally’s Pinball machines we played-well before all the arcades opened with PacMan.

What was the bar that had nickel beer next to the Skags-Albertsons on Florida at Sherwood?

We had one of these on Hooper near Blackwater Rd when I was a kid. It turned into a 7/11 and eventually a Cracker Barrel. There was a pretty gruesome murder at that store in the 80s. Overnight clerk found cut into many pieces by the morning employee. The cops always thought it was the ex husband but couldn't prove it.

It was awesome
People were friendly, you could leave your door unlocked/open at night
And Mr Miller was always walking around town whistling show tunes

I was a kid in the 70s but I can remember for Christmas this family in some neighborhood in BR had this extensive Christmas display that ran pretty much through their whole yard and carport, and they would let anyone who wanted to see it go in their yard to check it out. Anyone remember what I'm talking about and where it was located? It was popular with the locals from what I can remember. It went on into the 80s as well as I can recall they had a big mechanical ET at one point. I can't remember much more specifics but I know it was something I used to really look forward to as a kid.

Saw Three Dog Night at Independence Hall circa 1972

Whatever happened to Independence hall? It was the site of Pro wrestling at least once a week, plus concerts in between.

That was a great article. Interesting that the Stones were rehearsing and playing in the PMAC yet staying at the Royal Orleans in the French Quarter. The Stones didn't play New Orleans until 1978, which I always found weird since they loved the city so much and mentioned it in songs.

I'd love to read about the Zeppelin show at the PMAC, as well.

Didn't they play Tipitinas in the '70's?

The family are named Messengers and everyone called it The Messengers Christmas. It moved to Denham Springs in 1992 and was still going well into the 2000's (50+ years) but I am not sure what is going on with it now.

What was the name of the Hotel on Airline where Home Depot is today.

The Oak Manor. Another of the AC Lewis properties.

Along with the Bellemont Hotel, the Continental (down on Airline heading west towards the old bridge almost to Plank Rd), and numerous apartment building. Hollywood used his house during the filming of "The Toy" with Richard Pryor.

Yes this is what AntiqueTiger is referring to but there was no destroying going on. The Advocate or State Times had a reporter at the concert and they wrote about all the kids drunk, high or passing out. The DA Ossie Brown shut down the concerts because of the evil of rock and roll. Bunch of bullshite.

This.

Ossie Brown had the seating policy changed from General Admission to assigned seating in the aftermath of the AC/DC Back in Black concert.
