Baton Rouge got in to the Disco trend earlier than expected, but left it later than everyone else did.

As a result, the city has never recovered. Ever.

Like Baton Rouge in the 1990s, but smaller.

A little before my time, but I do know the large building across from BR beach was the happening place. It would get some bands that were up and coming. I do know ZZ Top played there.
There was also a bar on the top floor of the “skyscraper” on Florida Blvd. it was called “Top of the Tower” or “Top of the Town” (something like that).

Woody Dumas was mayor.
Woodlawn was considered waaaaaay out of town, so were
Baker, Zachary, Gonzales, and Denham.

Sherwood Forest, Villa Del Rey and Broadmoor were the upper middle class white neighborhoods.

Before “The Who” performed at the River Center (Centroplex back then), Baton Rouge was heading in the direction of Austin, TX, as far as the music scene goes. BR was pulling in major names in small venues like The Bayou, the place on Stanford, etc.
When “The Who” performed, the fans destroyed the River Center, and they put a stop to all rock bands there for at least 10 years, and basically killed the growing music scene in BR.

When did they finish I-12? I think it ended a little past Airline until the early 1970s right?

If you want to get a feel of the BR scene of the 70’s, there is still one place, The Patio Bar on Jefferson is the place.

It was called The Speakeasy. I was too young to go in, but I hung outside for a lot of great music.

Top Of The Tower was the bar on Florida.

We pretty much had to make up our own fun in BR. At least the drinking age was ~14 and we could drive at 15.

I vaguely remember them building the overpass from I-12 west bound to I-10 east bound, so that was 71 or so.

When did they change the driving age? I got my license at 15 in 1993.
