if the established leaders if EBRP had worked with St George proponents to address concerns or allowed them to create a new school district the two times that were tried, we would not be having this discussion today.

It's the State Legislature stating that incorporation was needed for a school district.

Leg only said that because locals wanted them to oppose the effort and this was an easy roadblock to throw up.

Sure, dude. I *feel* that the beautification of downtown is a waste of my money. New sidewalks? Okay. New giant silver toilet seat cover billed as art? Nope. All the cash spent by those donut critics down at BRPD (I've yet to meet a good city cop). Every cent sunk into that dumpsterfire known as EBRPSS. The green light program to synchronize lights doesn't seem to have reached seigen, Coursey, or anywhere I typically drive. I *feel* my cash is largely misused.

Seems to me the legislature only said that because that's what the big black caucus told them to do. You had folks who only care about a library in Sabine voting on our schools. If they weren't directly affected, they fell in line. Oh, and that bitter hag for "one community" is a cancer to us all.

From what I've heard St. George would have a surplus if incorporated. The real issue for people IMO is that BR would be losing their tax base. A majority of residents are in the SG area and all of their money is spent in stores in the SG area. Is that what the real problem is here or is it something else. I don't think BR gives a shite about what's best for people in the SG area. So why would anyone not in the proposed area be against this. I want to be educated more on the issue. If anyone can help.

Good luck, friend.
Major sticking points are the horrible schools in EBRPSS, fear mongering by the advocate and the political powers that be in BR proper. We in SG want to incorporate, and all of a sudden, BR wants to try to annex shopping centers like the mall and Perkins Rowe, when they were never interested in policing or fixing their infrastructure before. All about the money for BR, mostly about the schools for SG.

People in the downtown area pay an additional property tax (10 mills) but god forbid downtown gets anything more than sidewalks.

Read much?
I said "New sidewalks? Okay"

This indicated my approval of sidewalk appropriations. Juxtapose this with the next sentence to deduce my disapproval of the giant aluminum bedpan.

If you have the extra 10k per year per kid to pay for private, why are you so butthurt over another couple of mills to make your property value increase? You'll get it back when you sell your house anyway.

So the DDD is supposed to only spend money on sidewalks?

The aluminum bed pan. Not familiar with this and you're opposed to it so I'm assuming it was a "gotcha" moment that has something to do with the arts or libraries? Are you talking about the Galvez stage?

Is the Galvez stage the huge round-ish aluminum thing downtown across from the courthouse? It didn't look like a stage to me, but maybe I'm not artsy enough.

Yes. It was funded through hotel taxes collected in the riverfront area of downtown development district.

It's earmarked for riverfront beautification and development. You can't legally use that money for anything outside of downtown, much less for St George.

It makes my day to know I had no part of this thing.
Don't know where they got the inspiration...

yeah, they had the New Years celebration there this week, they claim to have spent only 100K on and had about 15K people attending, well every picture I saw of the event, the crowds looked very thin and I do not suspect that there were any where near 15K actually there, maybe it was like LSU football and they announced "paid" attendance (you know the tax payers)

So the property values wouldn't increase if a school district appears where there is none? I'm sure if you built in a flood zone, your mileage may vary, but Zachary's property values appear to be doing okay, from what I've seen.

Actually, Lee High was reopened a year and a half ago for 9th & 10th graders, and they added another grade this year. They are currently in the old Valley Park location until the new school building is rebuilt, but this year they became a dedicated STEM (+ arts) magnet school. Article from last spring and school website

I think the Valley Park site is small though, and since it's still "rebuilding" (the school itself, not the physical building), their enrollment is still low.
