What makes nearly all Indian food smell like spicy tar?

Serious question. Too much of something awful in a lot of those dishes.

Big old world out there......you might want to embrace it.
Those spices are fricking wonderful.

There is a lot going on. Maybe I don't like it because it's too busy.
I think the over use of cumin (and probsbly hundreds of other things) is why I just can't get on board with the smell, appearance, and taste.

While house shopping years ago we walked in this beautiful home and the smell of curry would knock you over.
I just turned around and walked out

Yes that's the problem. I should just automatically like food that smells, looks, and tastes awful to me.

You're crazy. Indian food is amazing. Though if you're in Louisiana, you've probably never had good Indian. The restaurants in Nola were bland as hell, especially Nirvana.
And the smell is amazing. I was a very picky eater growing up. But I had a couple close friends that were Indian. Their aunts and cousins were doctors and would stay with them while establishing their residency in America.
I remember staying out all night and crashing at their house. When I woke up and went downstairs, it smelt like heaven. They showed me the food cooking, and it looked gross. Like something I'd never eat. But I knew something that smelled so good, couldn't taste bad. Eating Indian food completely changed my eating habits.

See, you criticize the cuisine of a culture as bad because it's not to your liking.......if it's a "hey, who else's doesn't like curry?", fine. But you are approaching it as if they have it wrong. They don't.

Where do you live? I can't think of any dish that I've had that was heavy on cumin.
If anything, try Tandoori chicken. It's some of the best chicken I've ever had. Briyanni is also good, and very similar to jambalaya. Some would say it's even better.
frick. Now I'm craving a type of food I can't get in Arkansas (at least a good version).

Indian food is so good, I want to visit there just for the food.

quote:yeah, not all that great, but Salt n Pepper hits the spot and kills any cravings for India type foods.... I may be elementary with my eastern taste buds though... I heard Saffron of Magazine was good and interesting but I haven't been yet.

Shawarma To-Go at the little gas station between Napoleon and Louisiana can't be beat.

Had this yesterday with rice and it is why I started the thread.
I love chicken. I love rice. Hate whatever seasoning was on that stuff. It was a waste of chicken and rice to me.

I only tried Nirvana in the city. There was an acceptable spot in Old Metairie, but I can't remember the name.
I meant to try salt and pepper. But it was in a weird spot, and usually forgot about it. And when I was in the quarter, I always ate at Verti Marte.

Probably went to a shitty restaurant. I've never tasted any heavy spices in that dish. It's usually mild.
But everyone is different. I used to work with a kid in the Appalachians who said the best pizza he's eaten was Hunts Brother's. Taste is very subjective.

I don't care for it either. Maybe I have had bad examples, but I am reluctant to order it anymore.

I'm with you. Not a fan of the Indian food.

If you ever visit Colorado, try it there. It's mostly Northern Indian/Nepalese, but still very good. I loved nothing more than waking up on a Sunday, smoking a joint, and proceed to eat Indian food until I was stuffed. Boulder probably had 6 different Indian buffets, in a town with under 100k people.

Indian restaurants in BTR/NO are inconsistent and can be hit or miss if you don't know what to eat from the myriad of options. Best to try some home cooked indian food with an Indian buddy first or have someone who is knowledgeable bout cuisine to have with you when you go out to eat indian.
It is one of the best cuisines out there but yes it may not be for everyone.

You are belittling me because I dislike whatever flavor that caused that tar smell instead of offering any real suggestions.
If I knew what the hell it was, I could probably order the food without it.
