I have an AC that needs freon once per year....have my own gauge set, but haven't used it in years.

what exactly does it take to become certified to buy freon?

It's cheaper to pay someone to do it than it is to keep the license active.

I guess you need to be a licensed AC man.

There is an open book course that costs $35. It's all you need for a Type 1 license and you can buy r12 then.

LINK

pay the fee and take the open book test you'll easily get a 100

That just isn't true. For a Type 2 or 3.. Yes.
But only a type one is needed to buy r12.

Type I Certification – Can only work on Small Appliance (5lbs or less of refrigerant)

A 13 Seer 2 ton unit holds 5-8 lbs alone.

You have admitted you aren't insured or licensed in the past so of course I fully understand you don't mind skirting the law and codes though.

Do what you want. It's your bank account when the EPA comes after you and not mine so IDC.

Take the Epa test. It's $100 and does not expire. The test is several parts, depending on what parts you pass is what you can do with refrigerant. And just passing the first part won't help because if it's a residential home your system doesn't take r12

Don't tell that to Napolean. He knows everything.

You A/C guys don't have to keep active E&O, or GL or anything to handle freon?

I always assumed you did which is the reason for my earlier comment about keeping the license active. I guess that's what I get for assuming.

I might get mine if not. I just didn't want to tack onto my already high GL.

You can handle all you want, just not suppose to be able to buy. Taking the test just insures that you take the proper procedures with refrigerant (reclaiming and disposing) not just letting it the atmosphere. And it doesn't hurt to keep documentation on bringing used refrigerant reclaim tanks in.

This is what I always thought. Just having the license though a lot of places will probably still sell to you. I doubt they are checking your insurance certs before selling to anyone.

Yea I get that.

Side note: The old man that used to put the A/Cs in my spec houses made a killing reclaiming freon out of fridges at Ft Polk when they would get rid of them. He would go do like 100 a day at $35 a pop or some shite. Crazy.

It's been awhile since I've taken the test, I'm not sure on which parts are which, but it's not an expensive test. Just adding refrigerant to a system is prolly ok if you have had that problem before, but a good hvac tech can diagnose possible problems with pressure and temp from the system to prevent future failures.

I wonder what he paid in returning the reclaim tanks. At $35 a piece sounds really cheap. A regular tank could only hold maybe 4-5 systems depending on their capacity. If he did a 100 a day he was letting that shite out.

(just saw fridges, he made a killing)

I wouldn't think he was the type to do that. Who knows though.

What's a reclaim tank return run?

This was also about 8 years ago when Ft Polk did a major remodel and a lot of new construction to their on base housing.
