What is your opinion on parents who forget their children in the car?

Whenever I see these stories I always hear people criticizing the parents for being careless and irresponsible etc. But I usually lean towards sympathy because I have had experiences where I just completely forgot about something really important with no explanation. Do you think you could ever make this mistake? And if so, could you live with yourself afterwards?

I've never left or almost left my kid in the car.

These people are morons.

I don't have kids, but I would think another life, and especially one helped create, would be more important than anything in the world.

I cannot imagine being so absentminded as to leave my child in the car. Assuming you mean live with myself after the child died in a hot car? Hell no I couldn't.

who am i to judge them if its an honest mistake....we all do it may not be as costly as leaving a kid in a car but its still a mistake.

There's a bit of a difference between forgetting to pick up some milk and leaving your child in the car.

I've never even forgotten my cell phone in the car. I can't imagine forgetting a kid.

An honest mistake is running out of gas. Killing a kid (accident or not) is a little different.

Opinions on this topic fall into two camps:

non-parents: they're idiots
parents: they're human

Why? It's still an honest mistake. Just on a tragic scale.

I read an article a while back that I think was actually posted here that went into the psychology of it. You're going through your day in auto pilot. You do one thing differently. Out of the ordinary you have to take the baby in the morning to drop it off at daycare instead of the SO. And your mind doesn't keep up. You make one horrible life changing frick up. Some of the people who do this seem to be perfectly loving parents. I do feel really bad for them. I'm sure some of them are simply shite bags though.

The only one I knew was a Cardiothoracic surgeon so probably not a moron. The guilt must be unbearable.
