I work with engineers of all fields who haven't done any actual engineering since they graduated. Just depends on who hires you. Some companies hire the smartest engineers for their potential skills rather than the fact that they are engineers.

Would probably be quicker to list the similarities

They're almost nothing alike

It's really surprising how many people major in petroleum because they think they're "good at math" and want to "make bank." In my experience as a petroleum engineer, it's the ones with that mindset that either a.) don't get jobs out of school or b.) are the ones getting laid off during a downturn (like the one we are currently experiencing)

does this cute, catchy phrase apply to professors who make a killing doing consulting with industry on the side or millionaires who come back to teach after they retire?

You must not be able to read. It shows it in your poor grammar.

Actual school sucked compared to the real world IMO. The social life and lack of responsibility associated with school on the other hand... yea, enjoyed the frick out of that.

Most engineers I've worked with spend an enormous amount of time planing stuff--but they never actually do any of the stuff they plan. Seems like they're paid to think about doing things.

That goes for engineers and all scientists.

Are you familiar with the 80/20 rule?

Engineering is basically the opposite
