The Shell station at Perkins and Oakdale (across from the Settlement at Willow Grove). Real good hamburgers, chicken shawarma and gyros for dirt cheap. (A cheeseburger, fries and a Coke is $7 with tax) All those construction workers building houses in Willow Grove go in there for lunch, so you know it's good.
Love their gyro plate--really cheap & good. But last time I went I got the hamburger special. Very well seasoned with chunks of stuff in it kind of like a meatloaf patty, but I thought what the hell, everything else I've had from there was good. Although different, it did taste good--until I got to the center and it was cold and raw.
I think I'll stick with the gyros or the kibbe from now on.

The park across the levee front he Vet school has the potential to be the fly of LSU when the river is down, but barely anyone uses it, and last time I was by there it hadn't been kept up.
Yvette Marie's
La Morenita
Blackwater Conservation Area
Mary Anne Brown Preserve east of St. Francisville
Hansen's Disease Museum in Carville (call ahead and you can get a tour of the facility)
Rope swing at the railroad bridge on the Amite
Comite/Hooper moutain bike trails are pretty legit for the area.

I don't know. They're not really secrets, rather they're places that aren't mentioned a lot.

RIP: Tabby's Blues Box
One of the coolest gems BR had, where if you could walk up to the door, you could get in and drink cheap beer and listen to good music.

I agree. Miss Tabby's.
If you haven't been, do yourself a favor and drive a few minutes up Old Scenic to Teddy's Juke Joint. Truly one of the areas best kept secret.

Good ole Tabby's. I think it was like $5 to get in and drink out of the keg.
