I'm not going to argue anymore but if that little area isn't "ghetto" to you, I guess we have different standards of living.

quote:so the Northshore is essentially NO's Marin County? Every recent arrival wants to burn the bridge and be the last one to move in...quote:It's funny because back in the early 1980's we said the same thing. The single biggest thing that I saw that really brought the quality of Northshore life down was when Beau Chene opened. The Tony Campos of the south shore flocked there to get their postage stamp sized piece of piney heaven and went to work turning Mandeville, Covington, and Madisonville into Veterans Boulevard North. Other subdivisions existed before Beau Chene but they didn't encourage the nouveau lifestyle.
It was better twenty plus years ago.

It's pretty much the perfect place to raise children. Plenty of jobs in New Orleans, good public schools, lots of good restaurants, decent bar scene for a town its size, scenic views along the lake, great walking/biking trails, multiple breweries, low crime, ect: It's just a really pleasant place to live, but in typical Louisiana fashion, its development is rapidly outpacing its infrastructure.
Gotta agree with all of this. March will make two years that we moved from Baton Touge to Covington. Our kids have great schools to go to and for the most part the people are pretty friendly here. I do joke with my wife all of the time that she's definitely in the minority here bc she goes to work everyday.
We live off 1085 so yes the traffic does suck on hwy 21 for now but thats to be expected when an area quickly outgrows the roads. It was the same in south BR. It'll be really nice once it is done though. We are currently in the Covington high zoning so once the girls are old enough for high school we will either be moving somewhere in the mandeville school district or sending them to catholic school. By that time we will have prob outgrown our house anyway.
We are obviously still learning about the area but we love that there are a bunch of parks for the kids, the bike trail, and alot of events geared toward kids. Restaurants are pretty good around here as well. Really like the fact that we are only an hour from BR and NO and also close if we want to make a trip to FL.
All in all we have been very happy with the move here.

So maybe gangs aren't slugging it out every night and tons of murders but it is still a run-down, high-drug area. If you are a cracker and want to stroll down 32nd at night, then more power to you.

Just had a kid so haven't been able to get out there but got your email written down, I'll be back out soon hopefully ...you probably know who i am already

My SO lives there but got flooded out. She's thinking of selling and moving to North La. That's a big step for a girl raised in the NOLA area, but she's had enough.

Nothing is good about it, nothing at all... Move along now.

Them numbers are not accurate. Probably 10% of Covington is high yellow.

Old Mandy right off the lake. Stay away from this area. Our crime has gotten out of control.

Hell, even Madisonville has a semi-ghetto area behind the elementary school.
Thats not ghetto dude. Just because their are black ppl there doesn't make it ghetto. Madisonville is likely the only place on the northshore without a ghetto.

You're also extremely preppy and fratty.
Some of y'all on here probably never seen and interacted with minorites.

This is Covington. Fun fact- one of those guys is in jail for double murder.
Again, I'm not shitting in Covington. It's one of the nicest towns in the state, but to say that little area isn't ghetto is ridiculous.

Madisonville used to be a pretty podunk town. That area was a lot less nice 20 years ago.

Grew up in Kenner and have lived in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Old Mandeville, Madisonville and now Covington for the past 6 years...
We love it. Gives us all the comforts of New Orleans being nearby without all of the BS and crime.
PROs:
Some of the best restaurants: Del Porto, Ox Lot 9, Lola, Pardo's, Toad Hollow, Gallagher's, Meribo, Sal N Judy's (not in Covington but damn good)
Chimes is very cool
Walk-On's coming soon
Three different rivers nearby for fishing, kayaking and recreation.
Lots of Louisiana food staples nearby: Bud's Broiler, Café du Monde, Popeyes, snowball stands, kingcakes, Rouses, specialty meat shop, daquiris
Acquistipace grocery store has biggest liquor selection in Louisiana
Ra Shop nearby :)
Bike trail convenient
Nice upscale Garden District style homes with architecture
Covington brewery in the middle of the city
Constant free events at the Trailhead, Columbia Street and Bogue Falaya Park
Music club on Columbia Street
Plenty of shopping now - Academy, gun shops, Best Buy, two movie theatres, specialty cigar shops, Sam's.
Near to Pontchartrain Vineyards for concerts
Art community
CONS:
Traffic on 21 north of I12 - it is currently being addressed but painful currently.
Ghetto in the 20-30s streets.
In 6 years my house is an additional +$200K from our purchase price, so apparently a lot of people like it as well.
