What is all this 9/23/2015 end times hoopla about?

After reading some news stories from links to conspiracy sites and whatnot I'm seeing a lot of info regarding the date 9/23/2015.
Is this the new Dec 21, 2012 date? I must have missed it but the wackjob sites are full of stuff about it.
Most of the center around a comet smashing into Earth.
What is the overall BS theory?

The LHC hasn't been powered on in 27 months (and everyone thought the first time it was on it would cause destruction) and they are trying an experiment to open up other dimensions.
