drowning mouse in a bucket of water
this is the first thing that came to mind. it's a hell of a lot quicker than poisoning, no mess and 100% success rate.

Use a clothes-pin and attach it to your child's bike. It won't make the cool sounds of playing cards but will work in a pinch. Nothing but positives come from this way. The kid is entertained, you don't lose any poker cards, and the mouse problem will have taken care of itself when your child gets back from hours of fun.

I had to get rid of a 7" rat that didn't die from the industrial size rat traps. Stuck the whole thing in a bucket of water. Dead in a minute or sop and easy to clean up.

People saying step on it have never had a glue board stuck to their shoe. That glue does not want to come off for anything.

Flip the sticky pad over and step on it so it doesnt stick to your shoe. Best to do it on a small piece of cardboard so you dont have to clean guts up from the floor.

After Kortina I had several mice caught on sticky traps. I dispatched them with the flat side of a square point shovel and then scooped up the remains and trashed it. Take it outside first.
Those sticky traps are truly a better mousetrap.

I suggested the bucket thing...

I'd like for everyone to take a second and notice that none of the animal rights people came out to argue about how inhumane it is to drown a rat.
Make a thread on how to kill a nuisance stray dog and you'll have a thousand people crying about how inhumane it is.

Pet snake. Just turn her loose.

I have a 2 foot piece of 1"pvc that I use when when mice get into the house... Quick bop to the head usually takes care of them and doesn't leave a mess

Put on work gloves, twist head until neck snaps.

Put the sticky trap in a grocery or trash bag. Go outside and stomp it, or hit it with the backside of a shovel.

I would use the ant hill idea
Stir up and hill and throw mouse on hill. Give them time to completely cover mouse. Spray the hell out of the whole mess with ant spray.
Ants are cannibals, so they will come out to eat the dead and it will kill them, until the poison is diluted. More bang for the buck.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen:
I was helping a friend out by running a Cat 5 in his attic. While I'm going up he warns me about a little "mouse problem". He goes on about how his wife is ready to move because of it. He let's me know to watch out for various mouse traps. I get up there, turn on the light and I see what looks like WW3 with mouse carcasses in every stage of decay possible. I get past that and the walkway takes a 90 degree turn to the left. It was a little dark back there so I take out my flashlight. Not 1 foot in front of me is a large glue trap, a live panicked mouse, and a 4' long rat snake with his face stuck in the trap about an inch from the mouse.
I jumped a little and my friend calls out "what's up, more mice?". I asked him if his wife was serious about moving. He said yes she is. I asked him how she felt about snakes.
If she would have been home they would have left right then and never looked back. I grabbed the snake by the tail and brought it out of the attic. I just wish I had a camera.
