1) Costco - It has the highest levels of detergents (engine cleaners) in 87 octane you can find.
2) Phillips66/Conoco - They have the 2nd highest levels of detergents in 87 octane.
3) any other top tier certified gasoline at a good price.

Detergent isn't added at the retailer. It's added at what's referred to as a sale station. Small tank farms where the rigs fill up to deliver to the retailers.

That isn't true. It varies by retailer. Costco, for example, adds their own additives in their own tanks at the pumps.

I know this, what's your point?

Where the truck is delivering the gasoline determines what blend and how much is put into the product

Shell in my personal vehicle and most of the time for my company truck. It is close to the house and convenient for my commute, but I will put whatever in the work truck in the event that there is not a Top Tier station around.

Really? Some pump jockey is handling proprietary chemicals and being trusted to add it at the correct ratio and mixing it in a static below ground tank without mixers or circulation pumps? frick that.

Kroger or QT. Both are convenient and have the lowest prices.

In South Louisiana it doesn't matter. All gas from 3 or 4 refineries in BR most stations are serviced by the Exxon Refinery, New Orleans/North Shore/Houma/Thib Marathon/Phillips 66/Valero. SWLA/Lafayette CITGO/P66.

I've never ever heard of additives being added at the retailer. Costco may buy a high additive fuel to be delivered to them.

Any name brand gas Shell/Chevron/Exxon/Conoco will protect your engine better than walmart/racetrac/cheap gas.

Chevron has a really good gasoline additive package.

Generic gasoline has minimum additive levels that it must contain to be sold, the majors just add additional additives in order to do a better job of cleaning valves, piston rings, etc

Specialty chemical companies make these additives such as huntsman/basf/dow.

The way it works at the refinery is gasoline is loaded onto a tanker truck. As the generic gas meeting all specs to be called gas is loaded, the additive of whatever "name brand" is injected into the gasoline.
