Growing up, I remember seeing so many of them but I can't remember the last time I've seen one in south Louisiana.
Have….. have you gone outside and turned over a dead log or moved some potted plants around?
They are everywhere still baw.

They now identify as Doodle Bugs.

Not a roly-poly, but here's a ladybug doing what ladybugs do, eating aphid eggs:
And here's a tiny parasitoid wasp laying its eggs in/on another creature's eggs:
It is a big ol' world out there. Start looking at it.
There's death at every turn out there, though, so be careful.
This is a firefly or lightning bug mimic. It flashes and lures in horny firefly males, but not for sex. It devours them on sight:
And for the love of all that is good and kind, don't kill this potter wasp when you see it flying around. It will feed the spiders you hate to its babies (the spider will be alive but paralyzed when it is eaten by the larvae) and pollinate your flowers:
If you must kill something, kill this prehistoric-looking a-hole. It is well-equipped for battle, but only wants to eat and damage plants/crops:

I actually saw one on my patio yesterday. First one I’ve seen in years.

Just happened to see some yesterday as I was hacking down a neighbor’s giant, matted, mostly dried, brown, pile of crap pampas grass. Once I raked at the base, the loose, soft dirt revealed some doodle bugs.

How often are you digging your fingers into the dirt?
This. I grow a garden and I see them all the time when weeding and cleaning up debris from around the plants.

As a child you played in the dirt and frequently turned over crap that you probabaly should have left alone. This is where the toly-poly bugs live. They are still there.
As an adult you no longer do this, so you do not see them.
Glad to have helped.

You sure don't see lightning bugs anymore either
I don't see them in the city but the wife and I were in the N. Ga. mountains last summer and there were tons of them flying around the VRBO place we had rented.
Brought back lots of memories of being in the country as a kid.

There's a YouTube channel that does shorts of the guy turning over random things in the woods and other areas. He starts every video with, "Today I flipped...."
He finds lots of salamanders, snakes, and centipedes.

When in the hell did they start calling them roly-poly bugs? We always knew them as doodle-bugs.

I see them every day up here in Hill Country.

What I don’t see much of now is toads. I always liked them.

I stopped seeing them too for years. Then my 1 year old rediscovered them and I realized why I hadn't seen them this whole time. I wasn't looking for them like he is now lol

My wife sells isopods online to reptile keepers. I have a shitload of different species of roly-poly bugs at my house in bins.
The dairy cow species is pretty cool.

All the insecticides and pesticides in use now. Lightening bugs, butterflies etc. have all been collateral damage.
