An elderly couple was cleaning junk out their house and sold an African mask to a local dealer for $157

Come to find out it’s worth over 4 million . The dealer a year later sold at auction for over 4 million

Should the dealer have to give the couple some of the profits ?

No unless dealer mislead them somehow or misrepresented something to them.

Brah, it’s 2023.

We all wear masks.

ETA: I dabble in coins & bullion. I do appraisals and sometimes have the opportunity to purchase collections from estates.

If there was a $4 million dollar coin in an estate and the folks didn’t know it, I wouldn’t frick them out of it.

I couldn’t live with myself and everyone who knew that I did that would rightly judge me in a negative way.

NO it should absolutely not be a requirement. What the frick? Now it would be the right thing to do. I would personally do it. To each their own though.

They are owed nothing. Dick move if the guy knew that it was valuable and said nothing, but they sold it for what they though it was worth. Their loss.

My grandpa got rid of his gun collection before he passed. The family is gonna put grandma in a home if she does something like this with everything they brought back from Africa

if the dealer knew they were dealing in the millions, then yes.

ETA: legally, i don't know if they have any claim, unless he said "i know a guy who specializes in African Masks," found out the value, and then lied to them.

if he was just antiquer who said here's $150 bucks, without knowing, sucky of him, not not a legal problem.

Wait until some nation declares it to be illegally exported and demands its repatriation.
Following the return of the Benin Bronzes, whoever paid four million could be out, and will sue the auction house and the junk shop owner. In today's repatriation mood, auction house and junk shop owner gonna' pay.

Have to? No.

Should he consider it? I think so.

Will I fault him if he doesn't? No.

He doesnt have to but if the take was $4mm I would cut them in for sure.

Also, if the guy knew the mask was valuable and the older less educated (on this topic) couple didnt then he took advantage of them. I personally think thats wrong.

Thats what I was thinking as well. And how would you prove that at the time the couple sold this mask, this guy was aware of its true value? And even if he did know, is he legally obligated to share some of the profits? I'm far from a lawyer, but I don't think, from a legal standpoint at least, that he would have to share anything with them.

Is that morally right? I don't think so. But as we see more and more every day, there is a huge difference between what is morally right and leagally right.

No, but since the case is in France what's likely to happen is the court will force the art dealer to give the old couple all the money from the auction of the mask and then the old couple will get to stand in front of the art dealer and fart in his general direction...
