Had an 06. Loved it for the most part. Sold it with 130k miles. Had three major things go wrong, all of them were about 1k to fix.

I had one as a loaner. It's a great vehicle.

If you like Top Gear, Clarkson owned one

We have one for the runners at work. It's an 08 with 230k-ish miles. Almost all city miles. It's never had a single mechanical failure and it's been driven HARD. I pull my skiff with it form time to time when my pile of shite daily driver is in the shop.

Towing capacity, ground clearance and MPG are the first three things I look for in such a vehicle. I recall none stacking up to the latest Outback which is cheaper.

Edit: I'm wrong about towing. 5000 is very strong (reviews say 6000 lbs--wish a manual diesel was coming). And ground clearance is killer (10.5). That price tag is a bit much though. MPG OK for those specs but a good 10mpg worse than Outback. I compare to Outback only because it's the overall best small suv/crossover, to me.

Crap now I want the Volvo.

Stay away. Repairs are incredibly expensive and frequent.

Was a big fan of the original XC90. Was seriously about to go the Overseas Delivery Route, but eventually determined that I needed a bit more interior space for the kids.

May have to revisit this as an option for a potential '16 purchase.

I wasn't even that bothered with cost for the repairs. It was the fact that some things had to be brought to volvo repair shop, V-shop or all star in baton Rouge. I hated the service at both places.

It's a car any soccer mom would be proud to drive.

What do I win?

Some have issues, but it's not Range Rover bad. :

hate to admit this but my wife wanted one of those a few years ago as her escalade was coming out of warranty, we were also buying a business from a guy that sold those, made us a "deal," didn't last two weeks before we went back to the Caddy guy and got rid of the pos and got her another escalade, which will be the last one

I have owned 3 Volvos. When you have a good one, then can run forever with minimal issues. Problem is a decent percentage of them have chronic issues that become very costly. There is a reason Volvos have bad resale value. I will never own another one.

5 star safety rating, medium reliability issues, a bit behind on user interfaces

Use interface is excellent - reminiscent of operating an iPad. Other technology on the vehicle is impressive. My friend got one of the special edition ones xxxx/1927. It's a very nice vehicle. Interior is one of the best I've ever seen. It's improved over the older ones with regards to exterior styling, but still has the ugly tail lights. I think it compares very favorably to its competitors (MB M class, BMW X5, etc.)
