You know all those women who are doctors, lawyers, engineers? In previous generations they would have been teachers or nurses, because those were the only professional careers open to them. That's why teachers were so much better then. Elevate the status of teachers to that of other sought after professions, and you'll get them back.

Women taking these poorly-paid jobs give men reasons to complain when they marry and divorce them. Don't marry a teacher if you don't want to pay child support and alimony.

Aim higher.

Of all of the anti-teacher statements in the hundreds of threads we have had, this might be the oddest one I've read.
Congrats!

Don't see anything wrong with it. I'm a junior atmospheric sciences major currently but I'm looking into teaching high school math and coaching track and cross country after graduating. Just feel like that's my calling in life and where I'd be happiest.

Teaching is a good profession. You won't get rich but you do make a difference. It's a good job for women, especially if the husband has a good paying job

And this is a reason why the job is filled with terrible teachers.

Teaching, if done properly, is more of a vocation than a job. And it is becoming more difficult every day with demanding and often unreasonable parents, lots of paperwork that has to be done on your own time, and rules about keeping certain children in the regular classroom. Your plan is good, i. e. substituting to be sure you want to do this before you commit to the educational requirements, etc. My wife is teaching at a private school after 30 plus years in public, so I hear about the challenges every day.

If you want to be hired as a faculty TRACK coach for a HS, I can't stress enough how important it is for you to be certified to teach math.

You don't see a lot of "track only" coaches on the faculty rolls at schools. Being certified in math makes you much more valuable.

A 5A school will pay you about $60K your first year (including your coaching stipend)

Also be prepared to be asked to assist the Athletic director in some capacity beyond simply coaching your sport

Yea that's exactly what I'm planning on doing. With my atmos degree I'll have all the course work to be certified to teach math I'd just need to get my masters in education and take the praxis. My plan is to possibly get a grad assistantship coaching at a university and getting a masters in math to build my coaching resume up some and going from there.

Eta: that's solid advice though man thanks

kids are fine. it's the goofy parents who all think their kid is a genius that's the problem.

You've got to become slutty and drink a lot

Look at it this way.....at least you're not a hair dresser

Eta: Girls with Master's degrees don't teach little kids. They either teach older kids, or are in administrative rolls

My wife is a third grade teacher at a public school. She taught first grade at a private school last year.

She loves it, because she genuinely cares for the kids. If you do not have patience, or if you do not absolutely love it, it will be a miserable experience. What I can tell you is she works over 60-70 hours a week between school, events, and lesson planning. She said the kids can be a pain, but the parents are the worst.

She got a B.a in Broadcast journalism from LSU and went through the TeacherReady program.

Edit: She only makes 42k a year.

My stepsister has been teaching middle school almost full time for a while now, and she is still in school. She seems to still like it. I think they do require internships for a master's
