Some people are cut out for it and some aren't.
If you like kids and enjoy watching them learn and can put up with the parents, it seems like a good career considering the benefits and time off.
I say go for it.

It's a cool job with a lot of time off. If the pay isn't an issue for you which it is not for me, it's a great career with great benefits. Go with your plan of substituting for a while. If you are any good and the least bit competent, you will most likely be offered a job. You'll have to work on certification which is very easy if you already have a degree. Just remember that when kids and parents act out, it's not personal. Grade your papers during your off hour instead of cackling with the hens in the conference room and you will not have to take the work hoe with you.

Good insurance, and state pension after 30 years. Just marry someone who makes more money. You guys will be rocking it.

Yep. Obviously, if you have a degree in the sciences, they will want you to certify in that area. In La, there are 3 certification levels, early childhood development (pre-k/K) elementary (k-5) and secondary 6-12. In secondary, you have to get s second certification in a field of study, ELA, Science, etc.
The original certification process gets you ready for the Praxis exam which it along with the course work allows you to apply for a licence. Your content knowledge allows you to specialize in a particular area of study.

I think it's a good career if you love children and you can deal with their bad patents and school administrators.
There is always a need for teachers, police, fire, nurses, correction, utility workers. They are never appreciated and will always be under paid but, they are great careers if you are the right kind of person.
I just retired from being a probation officer after 26 years.
Go for it.

Teaching is a good profession. You won't get rich but you do make a difference. It's a good job for women, especially if the husband has a good paying job. The retirement is a plus also.

But I had lost something, too. I had lost something which could never be restored to me while I lived. All the grace, the beauty, the poetry had gone out of the majestic river!
In short, don't do something you love for work. You'll love it less once it's understood and common place.

Wife did it for 30 years and loved every day. Now it cost me a fortune for all the jackets and coats she would buy for the less fortunate kids. She was a preschool teacher and would do it again if she had the chance

I think you should of course research the potential benefits and drawbacks of the career, but that should not include what other people think of it.
The bottom line is whether you think this is something you want to do with your life. There is nothing wrong with honest work, no matter what the work is. If you like it, and you're good at it, you will get paid.
If I listened to what other people thought about what I do (I'm a writer), I would never have enjoyed 25 years of continuous employment, doing something I love. My dad told me I would never get a job doing what I do. My mom was pessimistic as well. I've had family and friends and complete strangers tell me they don't understand why I studied what I studied or did what I did. But I do just fine.

If you're an elementary teacher between the age of 21-30, you're a wife/girlfriend of an oilfield worker. At least in South LA.

Having been married to a teacher in the past, I think it is an admirable profession and have respect for those that do it.
The OT in general won't give you much respect though.
