My kids and I were talking about putting together some relief packages for people of SWLA. So my question is for those who had to rebuild after Katrina/Rita/Gustav/2016 Floods, Harvey, etc. What were some things you wished you had in the days/weeks after the storm?

Some suggestions so far:

-Work Gloves
-Cleanup Tools/Supplies
-Plastic Totes (Storage Containers)salvage and storage.
-Space Saver Bags
-Diapers/Wipes/Baby Formula/Food
-Pet food
-Animal supplies to local shelters
-Box Fans

Fully charged power banks.

It may only give 3-7 phone charges, but it will certainly come in handy while the power is out

Send thoughts and prayers on FB.

In all seriousness go volunteer if you can or send supplies.

Big plastic containers with lock down tops (like they sell at WalMart).

Is that to help with moving/storing whatever can be salvaged?

For Rita, I found a church that would be offering supplies to residents in hardest hit areas. I then collected supplies they said were most needed and loaded up a rental truck with supplies over 1 week. When word got out, there were more donations that a rental truck could handle so another La native rented another, smaller truck. We then drove the supplies to that church for local distribution.

Yes, first thing many will do is go through the house and salvage whatever they can. They take and store them before the rebuilding process starts. A lot of stuff they will need for wherever they end up living temporarily.

It's much easier to store and get to stuff in those plastic bins as opposed to cardboard boxes.

Best thing would be to make and donate muck buckets.

A muck bucket is:

One five-gallon bucket with resealable lid (If bucket has been used, clean well but do not use if it has held chemicals of any kind.)

Four scouring pads

Seven sponges, including one large

One scrub brush

Eighteen reusable, lightweight dry cleaning towels (e.g. Handi wipes)

One 50 oz. or two 25 oz. bottle(s) of liquid laundry detergent

One 16-28 oz. bottle of liquid disinfectant dish soap

One 12-16 oz. bottle of household cleaner that can be mixed with water (no spray bottles)

One package of 48-50 clothespins

Clothesline, two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.

Five dust masks

Two pairs heavy-duty, waterproof dishwashing gloves (latex-free, non-surgical)

One pair work gloves, cotton with leather palm or all leather

24-28 heavy duty or contractor type 30-45 gallon trash bags on a roll and removed from carton

One 6-9 oz. bottle of non-aerosol insect repellent

Awesome. Thank you for the replies. I added some of them (no hooker and blow) to the OP for anyone else who may be interested.
