Went there after I came off active duty. Did not get to see much of the base as I was in the field the whole time. It was August and the thing I remember the most about Ft. Polk is every day about 2 PM it would come a freaking flood for about 20 minutes then the sun would come right back out. Miserable does not begin to describe how hot & humid it got inside the tank.

At least they have kick arse tamales, though.

You do realize that the locals dip their tamales in pure mayonnaise? I didn't believe it until I saw it. I love me some mayo but seeing that made me almost sick.

What are your hobbies? Do you like the outdoors? Do you like a slow country lifestyle? Lived here most of my life. Most of my friends dad were military. My son in law retired here. My brother in laws trained here. Better than it was, but still unattractive to soldiers that want more to do besides hunting and fishing. Cost of living is cheap. Like above poster implied, if you are career minded and are into the ranger airborne thing, then a good soldier will benefit from Ft Puke. And they now have an automated bowling alley, that not only sets the pins back up, but will keep your score and tell you how to knock down what you have left. I'll answer any question you might have, other than military ones, if you want. Good luck and hope your stay is memorable.

Also, when you go to the field, everything will get wet and remain wet the entire time you are there.
Back in July 98 i believe, i was with the quartering party to set up our AO. They decided to make is do it in full NBC gear. Bu the time the rest of the company got there, 8 people had fallen out with heat injury. So drink water in the summertime.

When I was there our barracks were portable buildings. Not sure if they've made any upgrades, but they do have some nice new on base housing for married folks. It's in the middle of nowhere and it's hot and humid as shite. I remember someone telling me that there is one family that owns a lot of real estate in Leesville and they are resist to any development in that area.

Way back in the day, i was in the National Guard, Co, B, 199th Support Battalion, Medical in St Martinville. We spent summer camps and many weekends at Ft Polk.

We had many strange skin inflammations to deal with due to the many fascinating bugs around Ft Polk. The worst case involved one poor guy who was in a 30 cal machine gun crew. The infantry tactics under practice required them to relocate their weapon into some concealment. They eventually found out exactly what an adventure poison ivy can be.

I suggest you read up on ticks and red bugs. Powdering your balls will become second nature.

They have so many on post housing that the co. that has the contract are offering them to retired and federal workers now. And most of them are less than twenty years old.

I lived in Rosepine in the early '80's for three years. I loved it there, but I don't know how much things have changed.

Well, thirty years from now when you're sitting by your fireside with your grandson on your knee it looks like you'll have to cough and say, 'Well, your granddaddy shoveled shite in Louisiana.'

Stop lying, Darth!

You know that you loved it. Those were the best days of your life, so, you should be honest and tell the folks that you loved it.

So I kind of already knew the consensus was that it sucks, but how is life there for adults?

I suppose I could travel to Houston, BR, NOLA on weekends/4-days.

I'm not enlisted, so I don't go get into fights at the bowling alleys, or whatever you kids are doing now.

Are there any decent neighborhoods to buy/rent a house if I'm there for a couple of years?

Any up-scale restaurants or bars, even though it's a small town?

With as many Soldiers that are stationed there, it can't really be that bad.

the most upscale establishment there is a place where you throw peanut shells on the floor. No lie. It is the worst town in La. Seeiously, Subway may be a decent dining option

It is a pretty boring place to be. I spent almost a year at Ft. Polk. In my spare time I would hunt, go watch a movie or go eat somewhere. I was there back in 2003, so I am not sure how much it has developed around the base. I would put in for a transfer ASAP.
