What Can the OT Tell Me About Being Stationed at Fort Polk?

Found out today I may be headed there, and just as I was getting ready to fight tooth and nail to avoid it, I realized I hadn't even appealed to the OT for insight.

Anyone here been stationed there?

Haven't spent much time around Leesville; I really try not to stop in CENLA if I can absolutely help it.

3 hours to BR, 4 hours to NOLA, 3 hours to Shreve...

What's the true story about Fort Polk and the JRTC?

i think that they still have a bowling alley. but, I believe that you have to set up your own pins after you knock them down. takes a while.

No idea about Fort Polk but I lived in Cenla for two years. Most miserable area on the planet.

And that's the best thing about it, allows you to avoid the reality of living there for a lot longer.

Awful. Fort Drum may be the only place worse.

You need to go to church and ask God why he hates you so very much.

No, but, seriously. If you are active duty military, and you are serious about a career in the military, you need to focus on your job. You already know that you'll be working lots more than 40 hours a week, so, in the little free time that you will have, at Fort Polk, you'll have an adequate place to sleep and work out at the gym. Fort Polk has nice facilities for those free time activities of sleeping and working out at the gym.

There are only about 80,000 people within a 50 mile radius of Fort Polk (that includes the people serving at Polk), so, life there is not big city life.

The Soldiers on Fort Polk are very busy. I constantly see them weapons training, physical training, loading up headed to the field and coming back from the field and preparing for Ranger School at the olympic pool.

If you have lots of free time to party or get bored, you are doing it wrong, with regard to your military career.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just giving advice, because every Soldier, even me, can benefit from such advice.

If you can establish a good reputation for professionalism at Polk and Bragg, you'll be well on your way with your military career.

Good luck !

Long drives to civilization.

I drilled with JRTC for years, it's a top heavy shite show whether you are staff or instructor.

Let me translate the above. Polk and Leesville suck so incredibly hard that it makes being at work seem like the best thing to do with your day. Even days off.

Zwolle. Although it isn't far away. At least they have kick arse tamales, though.

That you're in the army, and somewhere along the road you made some very poor decisions.

There is no shortage of meth in the surrounding areas. As such, there is a shortage of teeth.

It's a complete shithole around there. When those guys stationed there do get free time, they usually pool together and take a taxi to Lake Charles to go out.
