If you can get them in WHAM and then Sherwood Middle that's the best bang for your buck. It's a direct path into BRMHS and those schools don't have the issues you associate with the other Government schools and you can save enough to send them to a prestigious University or put that money into your retirement account. The teachers are legit and dedicated for the most part. I would give parental involvement a C compared to the private schools, where parents are MUCH more involved, and I say that as an involved parent.
Catholic is the same as it's always been, a great choice for the Catholic family. Episcopal produces top students but I personally reject the Social pressure of that school, not my cup of tea. Parkview Baptist is a good environment for the average kid,is a very nurturing environment early, but maybe not for the academic superstar later. I graduated from Dunham but I don't really have a true feel for how good that school is. Lots of smart kids there and super-involved parents. Runnels is doing their thing over there-nobody really knows what's going on over there, but everybody seems happy.
For my family the BRHMS magnet school path is easily the best option.

Myth... Usually from people who think they cannot afford it. Friends of ours kids are there and they are by no means rolling in the dough and the school has a very generous scholarship fund anyone can apply for. Their kids are thriving and have friends there from all economic and social backgrounds.

Ditch Digger child - Zachary would be perfect, they really spend a lot of time on the lower performing kids since they bring the LEAP test scores down. Also spend a lot of time at home with the youngster teaching him to be a plumber or electrician. That or work on his athletic skills at a early age.
Average child - Pick a excellent preschool and try to instill discipline at a young age. This child is going to need to learn to outwork every one else. Private school would be perfect since the smaller class sizes would be advantegous as well as connections he can make later on in life.
Gifted student - Try the gifted or magnet school route. The private schools have a ceiling with dealing with gifted students. Gifted schools in EBR have small class size and some of them segregate them as much as possible from the general population.

In the past few years Episcopal has been offering more academic scholarships/better financial aid programs in order to diversify the school. Also, another huge benefit of the school is the "who you know" aspect. While the school isn't 100% full of overly wealthy rich kids, it obviously has its token few. Couldn't hurt to establish good relationships with top notch lawyers and businessmen from around Baton Rouge.
