Camping at Toledo Bend one Easter. The fabled "Easter Cold Snap" came through and we nearly froze.

Hauling in an ice chest full of blue crabs when I was about 10 while wading at Grand Isle with a piece of string, some spoiled meat, and a small dip net.

Caught a hard head while surf fishing at around 13 years old (summer of '94?). It came off the hook at my feet and I attempted to kick it back into the water. Fin went through my beach shoes, through my pinkie toe, and out the other side of my beach shoes. Had to reach down and pull it out of my foot. Limped around the rest of the trip. I still love the island and take my family as often as I can.

Catching crabs in the surf and going out catching specks. Grownups drinking on the porch and dancing to swamp pop.

It's amazing how grand isle was basically for the poor people not all that long ago

Now it's a damn destination. I miss the old days of the whole place being old trailers and shitty house boats and small busted up tiller handle boats.

I used to love going to cigars to launch the boat. I think that was my favorite thing in the whole world for a very very long time.

True Louisianans used to vacation at AstroWorld.

We have family in Houston so would visit them then go to Astroworld all the time
I’ve been to Grand Isle when I was young and all I remember is they had game rooms and we probably went crabbing at night

We spent many a summer at ponchatoula campgrounds. They had a nice beach area with a platform in the middle of the river you could jump off. To the left the river narrowed in you could ride a canoe, to the right it widened and got deeper so you could water ski. They also had a pontoon boat that pulled inter tubes behind it for about a 30 minute ride.

Camping on the beach, surf fishing, catching sand crabs at night with buckets and flash lights, the salty smell of the gulf mixed with fish, indescribable humidity.

Learning how to throw a cast net and catching the shrimp by the pound. Right there at the bridge down one from the entrance to Elmer's Island.

I remember Grand Isle's entire beach being covered in dead fish and little me being totally freaked out by it.

Crabbing with turkey necks is a good one.

I remember Lake Bruin had this strange little lobby/store on the property where they had one of those chairs that's an open hand. LOL.

Lake Fausse Point, Caney Lake.. We really liked state parks growing up.

I remember my dad getting in a fist fight when some drunk guy in the rental next to us was cursing. He didn’t like people cursing in front of women. I guess Grand Isle wasn’t the best place to be for that.

I also remember our mom not letting us wear anything white at the ‘beach’ because it would forever be stained by the dirty water.

I also remember there being trash everywhere all over the side of the roads.

salt crust before dawn on the boat left in the slip overnight.
cool May mornings with dad dragging a trawl for bait or food if we caught enough
after lunch...beach with mom to scope crabs
Sundown...bridge fishing with pawpaw

if not shrimp season.
dawn in the surf- fishing
repeat above

Every summer weekend for a year or 2 till the camp got destroyed by a hurricane.

Also cast netted a bunch of shrimp off of Highway 1 on the way down to the island in the fall.

I miss the salt crust on the boat...the smells of salt air. haven't experienced that since katrina.

Remember catching trout in Baratara Bay on my Zebco 202 with my dad and brother. Also remember the camps all having yellow porch lights. Seining for crabs in the surf. Had to wear tennis shoes in the surf cause the crabs were so plentiful. And going floundering with a Coleman lantern at night.
And for some reason, I have a vivid memory of the sun shining off the water in Caminada Bay. I remember looking at it from my bedroom window on the beach side of the island. Remember the old Saveway (or Sureway) grocery store and walking the pier to my dads boat at Bridge side marina.

I was very blessed to have that time with my family.

Friend,

I spent a summer of my youth in Grand Isle and am working on a Top 10 memories of Grand Isle as we speak! God works in mysterious ways. But here is a brief run through foreshadowing. Pirates Cove in Uncle's Viking during the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo 1998. Shrimp platters at Sarah's Diner and pizza at Starfish. Crabbing on the beach. Speckled trout limits wade fishing at the rocks. Sitting on the docks at Pirate's Cove drinking a lemon lime Slush Puppie. Cousin getting a speeding ticket in downtown Grand Isle and then talking his way out of it. Grocery shopping at the big grocery (Sureway?). Fishing off the pier in the State Park. Church services in Our Lady of the Isle. Going out in a flatboat to fish Barataria Pass one night and getting stuck in a shrimper's net. Exploring Fort Livingston with Cousin on a rained out trip. Limiting on reds in the canals along Highway 1 when the Viking had mechanical problems. Hanging out with the fish cleaners at Pirates Cove and learning how to filet fish from them. Handing out Bibles to people entering and exiting Artie's Bar. Getting struck by a stingray while crabbing and some lady on the beach offering to urinate on the wound. So many more memories!

Yours,

Inlaws had one of those old EXXON camps right on the beach & we used to set up the boiling pot, wade out & catch a string of crabs, walk back under the camp & put them in the pot, back out to the surf, another string of crabs, all day long till we were sick of eating fresh crab. But as much a memory, that speed trap in the middle of Golden Meadows always caught people. A 25 mph zone & the trap was set for 26 mph.
