Wife and I recently moved here and are looking for ideas for weekend trips within driving distance from New Orleans. Figured the OT might have some good suggestions. TIA

Well, Biloxi is about an hour or so from there, lot of casinos and a pretty crappy beach.

Bay St Louis is an hour away. Has a small but nice downtown and the second Saturday night of every month all the shops stay open late and they usually have a band playing on the main street. Has a new B&B/hotel that just opened that is supposed to be pretty nice.

That's what's up.

But ya, if you want a short drive from New Orleans I think you have to head east. Anything really different is a much farther drive in the other directions.

Destin is only 3.5 hours away

Orange Beach is 2.5

Grand Isle is 1.45 m

Memphis is an option

Lake Charles la burge is 3 hours

Biloxi is 1.45 m.

Unless you wanna go to Baton Rouge and catch an LSU Baseball or Basketball game those are your only options.

The fishing is good south of Houma is thats your thing.

12 hours in a car for a "short" weekend drive. Don't think so

Can catch the Amtrak out. The schedules suck, but they are doable.

Honestly, New Orleans is poorly placed for weekend trips if you aren't going to fly. It's just too tucked away geographically.

Of course I'm not a hunter/fisherman nor all that old so I guess there are things that might appeal to me in my later years. Like antiquing or something

Amtrak schedule from New Orleans to San Antonio has you leaving at 1:45 pm on Friday and arriving at 9:55 pm on Sunday. 50 hour train ride one way and you have to pass thru Chicago. That's not doable.

Houston is 5 hours, which is doable for a weekend. San Antonio is like 7-8, with Houston traffic, which ain't doable for a weekend drive.
