to each his own... i just really find that cut throat is a shitty, conniving way to play.... it's the dirty, redhead cousin of the follow suit game...

By far the most difficult thing for beginners to comprehend is

A) Don't throw away the off 5 by accident.

and

B) You have to WIN the points, not just have the points. Having both red 5s but no other trumps when Hearts is the trump essentially means you won't win either one of them, so don't bid 10.

I find that follow suit is the everyone gets a trophy version of Pedro. Takes much strategy out of the game

To each his own except when you're just wrong.

I've played both ways, but I'll never understand the logic behind following suit. There are 14 cards that matter. The rest of it is just fluff.

agreed... i can't understand why the throwing away the 5 thing is so hard, but my god, it's so hard for them to understand...

In follow suit you can bid with both 5's and like a 7 and try to run everyone out of trumps

Wouldn't that technically be strategy though?

i have too, and really the preference really boils down to a Laf vs. Terre thing... it's not that difficult to switch between the two, just like it's not hard to adjust to having to earn 1 more point when forced bid...

If you're teaching someone who plays spades, it doesn't really take much time to learn.

I usually put the point cards and values on a sheet of paper for everyone, then we play a few hands face up to show the strategy, and off we go. People tend to get caught up in the format of the game too much.

"Why do you deal 3 cards at a time?"

"Why do we only have 9 cards?"

"If I'm supposed to have 6 cards, why did I only keep 2?"

"Why does the 2 win itself?"

AHHHH, just watch a few rounds and it will all work itself out.

It's not fun to me when the first 2-3 cards every hand are off suit. Happens a lot more in follow suit that cut throat

I wouldn't suggest follow suit eliminates strategy altogether, but it eliminates some and introduces others that are, IMO, unnecessary to the point of the game. Plus, for beginners, I find it is more difficult to follow.

By the way, originally from Terrebonne, so the stereotype applies

so anyway, would any of you be interested in trying to get a game together? i'm sure there are some establishments around the BR area that would let a small group of guys drink and play cards for a little while once a week/every two weeks....

I learned how to play pedro while attending Nicholls St. (Foosball is only other thing I learned). From Lafourche so we play follow suit. Tough to play Terrebonne rules when all you play is follow suit. Fun game.
