I just heard Archie use this phrase:

"They used to call me the gouache (sp?) kid. That's because I was the only gentile I guess in the whole garden district. Except for the sprinkling of daygos. Which they might as well be Jews anyhow."

There is no way that they would be allowed to use a saying like that anymore. And those types of sayings were all over that show.

Man, people used to not be such pussies about shite like that.

You're entirely missing the point if All In The Family.

That show was cutting edge in it's time. If I remember correctly, it was the first time we heard a toilet flush on tv.

There was no point. It was just a city racist spouting off.

On the other side, you had Sanford and Son which made fun of white people. Different time period for sure:

American Masters was about Norman Lear last night. Fantastic.

Just looked and it's on again tonight at 1:00am. Well worth the 90 minutes.

You couldn't go anywhere near those scripts with a ten foot pole these days.

Or what about making Gorilla cookies with Esther's face on Sanford and son?

Gone.

Think Moses Gunn could have said this?

Norman Lear gave the network brass constant headaches. He didn't push the limit, he punched right through it.

I'm surprised you don't love that show. Rob Reiner was in that show, one of the biggest liberals on the face of the earth.

You realize that a large part of that shows purpose was showing how bigoted people could be on all sides and how a good person (Archie Bunker was in fact a good person) were products of their environments, right?

He just said "the coloreds don't know nothing about clean clothes"

Incredible.

That, Sanford & Son, The Jeffersons, Lavernge & Shirley and Alice Kiss My Grits were all shitty TV.

Archie was more racist than the North LA rednecks I grew up with. Edith would have left him but she was too ugly.

Always greatness when Esther came on.

CBS had it going on in the 70's: All In The Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett, MASH
