How thoughtful of BLM to be worried about BR enough to come to down, stir up hatred and eventually leave so the locals deal with the fallout

For the locals, this mass showing was a long time coming. Activists said the discrimination and police abuse have been so entrenched here for so long that it was time to stand up and say something.

“The bottom line is Baton Rouge is bad,” said Judy Whitney Davis, 51, who describes herself as the third generation of proud civil rights activists. Her parents were the children of sharecroppers who went to college and marched in the civil rights movement. Her grandfather set a building on fire as the Ku Klux Klan was meeting there. Her kids grew up on stories of struggle and perseverance. “And in 2016, I thought it’d be over by now,” she said. Instead, she finds herself advising them to protest — “and how not to die.”
quote:
Black Lives Matter activists worried that this swampy state capital, with its history of slavery and civil rights struggle, could be the next Ferguson, Mo. — another medium-size U.S. city with a predominantly black population and a predominantly white police force ill-equipped or unwilling to respond to the grievances of black Americans, or deal with protests for better rights.

Young people sat on cars with music streaming out open windows, waved some placards and generally commiserated, while sipping beer. The police were nowhere in sight. They seemed to be maintaining a respectful distance.

Riot police appeared, their faces covered with plastic masks. Protesters couldn’t understand a word of what they were supposed to do, or where police wanted them to go

Amazing that WaPo supports peaceful assembly in the 1st amendment and will go to nearly straight up lying in their article to make a stance in support of the Constitution. And will then use the same "half truths" in hopes to repeal the 2nd amendment.

Funny how the WaPo reached for comment from only BLM and the police admin. Most people in BR, regardless of how they view the situation, I'd imagine think the BRPD are doing a good job balancing exercising free speech and maintaining law and order.
It's as if the author doesn't understand the concept of "testing the boundaries". Likely there are a lot of protesters smart enough not to directly agitate the police or block the road, but there are plenty that think protesting=freedom from law. Those idiots need to be made example of and told that this is not thier frickin playground.

And this makes her a hero?
So if someone sets a meeting of BLM on fire they'd be a hero too, right?

Well, she's obviously not biased nor does she have an agenda given her occupation.

Is Baton Rouge majority black now? What is the percent? I thoight it would be relatively mixed.

I'm always amazed how little the general public knows when it comes to protesting.
Like if you don't file for a permit with the city/state (depending on your location), then yes they can and will arrest your arse for obstructing traffic.
I can't tell you how many posts I've seen on Twitter and Facebook with the outrage over the arrests. If you're going to exercise civil disobedience, then yes there are consequences.

idiotic people hear the "right to protest" and "constitution" one time in elementary school and think they can just interrupt everyone else's lives without ramifications

I keep seeing references to the KKK. Are there even any KKK members left in the world? If so, what percentage are FBI agents?
The KKK thing started during the Mizzou bullshite campaign. I can't believe it's been perpetuated.
