So my washing machine took a crap on me night before last. I kind of like the ones that are high capacity with no agitator(top load) and may buy one. Does anyone have one? If so do you like it? Has it held up well?

We've had a Whirlpool Oasis HE for about 8 years now with no issues.

Donkeypunch owes no one an apology. My Dad taught me at a young age about not being an a-hole that wears stuff out prematurely by abusing it. Drop the clothes in one piece at a time until it is full. Apparently everyone didn't get that memo.

One load per day on a slow day. Us plus three kids , two of which play sports. Add in sheets, blankets and towels and we are like a laundry mat.

Consumer reports

Washing machines No front loaders made our laundry list of losers and even some that were middling on cleaning were excellent at water and energy efficiency. The same can't be said for a number of top loaders. The seven washouts on our list range in price from $380 to $800 and four of them were particularly dismal at getting clothes clean. The best thing about the Speed Queen AWN542, $800, was its vibration score. Overall it scored a 40 and for that money you can buy the top-scoring LG WT4801C[W] for $700 and still go out to dinner at a fancy restaurant. The LG also had an excellent vibration score but, more importantly, aced the washing tests and got good scores on water and energy efficiency.

I just bought a used in good-condition whirlpool washer and dryer with knobs and no bells or whistles.

It will last me forever and I paid $200 total.

We've went the used route several times. I was actually going to buy a new one last year and my Aunt offered me hers for free. I think that we just wash way too many clothes to get value out of one that is half used up. A year out of free isn't too bad though.

We are leaving for the beach in two days and don't want to come back to piles of clothes and no washer nor do I want to be trying to run here and there looking for a deal on a used one. I will bite the bullet.

fwiw I sold washing machines 35 years until retirement last year. I could never recommend a top loader with no agitator. They all had a very difficult time cleaning dirty clothe because they could not create enough turbulence in the water such as an agitator model or a front load model. They also had no water level control and most of my clients wanted to see there clothes covered in water.
I would personally recommend a front load LG or Samsung. There is a Samsung front load on national promotion this week at 499.. that's what I would buy with my money and if you are doing a load a day I would suggest the 5-year warranty strongly. Front-load machines in general will save you approximately $150 PER YEAR in energy by using 25-30 less gallons of water per load and they spin out approximately 50% more water then a normal top load so your dryer time is cut considerably and a front load will have approximately 50% more capacity than your old style agitator model. There is also minimal wear and tear on your clothes when using a front load washer compared to the Damage Done to your clothes by an agitator.
The problems people talk about with front-load machines normally are all caused by user error. Just remember to reduce your HE detergent to about 2 tablespoons because you're only diluting it with 10 - 14 gallons of water instead of the 40-45 gallons of water you're using now. Also you must leave the door cracked after using otherwise you have a sealed environment which creates the mold field people talk about.
Whatever you can comfortably shut the door on you're good to wash.
The Speed Queen with the mechanical controls (they have new models now with electronic controls) is also great machine but at approximately $800 I don't see the value up against the front loader which just based on the Energy savings will pay for itself..
Hope this helps..

I've always had traditional washing machines and just bought an HE (top loading) for my new house.

I fricking hate it. I hate everything about it. I seriously can't believe only one company makes the old school washers these days.

Dealers are aware of the inherent problems of non agitator top loads ...I would go back to store you purchased from, tell them in a nice way the machine was misrepresented at time of purchase and they may give you a reselect option ....even if you have to pay a nominal restock fee it will be worth it in the long run

The big problem with washers and dishwashers is the energy guidelines the government has rammed down mfg throats...

Google Speed Queen vs Maytag video! What an eye opener. We had a LG $1000 plus that we gave to our church after 14 months. It would get out of balance and start over. These HE models just fill with a puddle of water so clothes do not smell as good as our SQ>
