Washer issue...paging Napoleon

As of yesterday when we put the temperature setting to warm on our washer we get a weird smell coming from it. If we run it on cold then the smell is not a factor. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks.

This happened to my uncle's washer. It turned out my cousin was torturing and killing neighborhood cats and hiding them behind the front panel. Do you have any kids?

That's why I asked what it smells like. If he says cats then that's the likely culprit.

Not sure how to describe it. Not a burning smell but maybe a mixture of natural gas and moth balls. It is really kinda hard to describe.

moth balls
Those little bastards will get in there and sweat in the summer time. Maybe if you vacuum them out the smell will go away.

Sounds like your'e cousin might be a serial killer.

So has your cousin murdered anybody yet?

Iluv, did you get to starkvegas last night? I ended up going and it was painful, but the drive to/from Ridgeland wasn't bad...

I don't know, I'm not his dad. Just trying to help out the OP with his washer issues.
Honestly though, dead cat is a tough smell to get out. You might be better off buying a new washer.

Smell caused by hot water is almost always, or is always a problem with the water heater.
You should smell the smell at every water tap.
Change the sacrificial anode in the water heater.
This offs a job to where if you call an appliance guy, they will collect the service fee and say"get a plumber".
Nothing in your machine will cause this problem. Smell from drain indicates a partial clog, but smell from inlet is a plumbing issue.
Sacraficial anode.

Thanks for that. However, we do not smell it while showering or bathing the kids. I just went and turn the hot water on in my bath tub around 3 in bed. I aslo filled a cup of water then I smelt it and it doesn't smell at all. The smell from the washer is very strong and smells up the entire house.

Okay. Next step then. Turn water off at washer. Disconnect the hot water hose (left connection) then with a container, slowly turn it on and see if you smell the water. If it's bad before the machine, you can just rule the machine out. If it doesn't smell, then the culprit is the machine.

Ok. Thanks. My wife is washing on cold right now. When this load is done I will try it. Thanks again.

When you disconnect the hose look at the part it attaches to on the machine and see if anything is in there.
What I would think next would be the smell would be caused by something in the tub. Somethings are more aromatic when warmed.
Most washers never fully drain, the pump's impeller is designed to stay submerged. So funk and grime build up in even the best kept machines as the water evaporates.
