I was talking with a coworker this week and he was talking about how great it was in the late 90s early 00s. Management brining in beer during the work day, ping pong, box seats at sporting events.

I've actually heard it several times from people in different professions.

I watched Mad Men.

If you were a white man you could drink and nap at work.

So yea, much better.

yes, prior to the Millennials screwed everything up.

My office brings in beer twice a week, we get catered lunch daily and we have ping pong in the break room.

You may need a new job.

And all of your coworkers could smoke at their desk...

whether you liked it,

or not.

ETA: Well, 25 years ago anyway.

I've never been in an office where drinking was commonplace. Then again, I pretty much grew up at UPS... not a good place to promote drinking...

We've had beer after work a couple times, we have lunch for $2.50 a day, and we have corn hole boards and play Pedro at lunch also have a gym in the office.

All in all it's not bad. They do what they can to keep morale up.

Yeah, throughout the 2000s it seems like companies started to develop and enforce more office policies and there is less "overlooking" certain things. Every office has someone who is completely "by the books" so that's part of the problem..

It's all about lawyers.

Lawyers write the laws, then charge us to sue each other.

We pay higher premiums to pay for it all.

And have less fun doing it cause everyone is scared of getting sued.

Lawyers. Our downfall.

Human Resources ruined all of that.

Wouldn't be a need for Human Resources if not for lawyers

It was better even in the 00s. When people actually showed up for work as opposed to working from wherever

20 years ago I was in kindergarten and the work we did was awesome. Coloring, learning letters, nap time, getting underneath parachutes, chocolate milk delivered straight to my desk.... oh yes those were the times

I am guessing the one person who downvoted this is a lawyer, but its pretty much dead on.

no, the workplace in general was not better at all...at that time, management ruled by fear and didn't treat people very well at all. task for the day for any manager was to cruise around the place yelling and cussing everyone to scare them into productivity.

Probably not. What would you do at work besides minesweeper and solitaire?

Absolutely. HR culture had started establishing itself by then, but it wasn't the nazi terror it has become at most workplaces. People worked fewer hours for better pay relative to inflation, offices were more relaxed, people had fewer jobs in their office so they could have greater specialization and focus, people were not connected to their job 24/7 and expected to always answer calls and emails, ect. It was completely different.
