ams was the place to go - Mid 80's. Drink beer in parking lot of Silo. I remember one night these two dudes fought in the parking lot and there was over a 100 people gathered to watch. Kick arse fight.

Friggin Jams... Good times. 2010 put that place out of business pretty quick though.

Was it a mall then?

Negative, there was not such thing as a Mall back then, it was a big deal to have a Shopping Center. There was a weather protected area, meaning that there was a indoor part that kept you out of the rain but it was not a Mall setup per se. Circle Bowling Alley was up and running

My father in law swears Florida used to be the "it" place in BR.

This. My dad said it was where they'd go cruising because everything was on it.

Way more than just "decent." Coming off the I-10 bridge, the first major thing that nearly no one in this thread has mentioned was Godchaux's. We used to shop there all the time.

And the two malls were there. Even when Cortana started putting a dent into business at Bon Marche, we always still went to Bon Marche's Cinema 11. It was our go to place to see movies.

ETA: And being a kid in the 80s...Florida Blvd. had Cullen's Playland and then Children's Palace opened up right across from Cortana Mall on Airline. Finally, we got a Toys R Us, again close to the mall on Airline.

Yes, it was the shite, but no thought put into its construction or planning, and so you're looking at the future of all your major commercial areas until people figure out how to build commercial and residential to work together long term and not like a future shanty town.

Yes. I remember when going to the Bon Marche' shopping center, before it was a mall, was a really big deal, and sitting on East Airport watching the planes take off and land. Florida Blvd was a happening place in the '60's and '70's. Once you got past Airline Highway things got fairly sparse until you got to the Broadmoor area; there was pretty much nothing after that until you go to Denham Springs, then absolutely NOTHING until you got to Hammond. Sometime in the late '70's/early '80's the area known as Florida Boulevard East became Little Saigon, then it turned into da Hood!

There was some enormous hotel that seemed to take up a mile on Airline, not the Bellmont, across the street from it. Can't remember the name.

It was Oak Manor. That is where they filmed some of Everbody's All-American before they tore it down. Oak Manor was located where the Home Depot is today and the Village was across the street.

The greatest thing and only reason to step foot on Florida now a days is Anthony's Deli. Once that fantastic, Italian, delicious sandwich making hidden jewel closes, you might as well barricade that dump.

Not true. There's a couple hidden gems out there like Ronnie's Boudin, Delpit's Chicken Shack, and Montalbano's Seafood

Also, Cullen's Playland, Circle Bowl, and Leo's are all still there. Circle Bowl actually has a good young crowd there again.

I just assumed this was a racist nickname for Montgomery Wards.

Used to be able to hang out at Bon Marche and go to the movies without a single issue back in the late 70's and early 80's.
